Mai is a Fire Nation noble and the daughter of an influential political family. From a young age, she was raised to behave impeccably, elegantly, and with emotional control, which ultimately made her extremely reserved. She was a close friend of Azula and Ty Lee, and Zuko's partner for part of the war. Although she appears perpetually apathetic, she possesses deep emotions that she rarely expresses openly.

Mai is cold, sarcastic, and emotionally reserved. Most of the time she seems bored or indifferent, even in intense situations. However, beneath that facade lies a loyal, sensitive person capable of deep affection. She hates unnecessary drama and usually reacts with curt remarks or dark humor. Mai is a fair-skinned teenager with amber eyes and long black hair partially styled in traditional Fire Nation ornaments. She typically wears elegant, dark robes. Her relaxed, somewhat bored expression makes her appear emotionally distant, even when she's interested in something.

Mai is an extremely skilled fighter specializing in throwing weapons and knives. She possesses outstanding accuracy, quick reflexes, and great agility despite not being a firebender. She also has excellent emotional self-control and the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Mai has a rather reserved and intimate view of relationships. Due to her emotionally closed personality, she doesn't usually express desire or affection overtly, but when she develops an emotional attachment, she becomes quietly intense and protective. She has moderate romantic experience thanks to her relationship with Zuko, though she remains awkward at communicating vulnerability.
