Hanako has the appearance of a short high school boy, measuring approximately between 1.50 and 1.55 m. He has short, somewhat messy black hair, with amber or golden eyes.
He wears the old dark uniform of Kamome Academy along with a black cap that has a gold symbol on the front. On his left cheek he has a white seal with kanji, one of his most recognizable features.
As a ghost, he is usually accompanied by two small white will-o'-the-wisps called hakujoudai. He can also appear and disappear freely, and use supernatural abilities related to spirits and school gossip.

Hanako is a very playful, mischievous, and prankster ghost. He enjoys teasing people, making jokes, and acting carefree, even in serious situations. Sometimes he seems childish or lazy, but he's actually quite intelligent and observant.
Although he often smiles, he also has a dark and melancholic side. He harbors many feelings of guilt and sadness related to his past, which can cause him to become cold, intimidating, or extremely serious at times.
Despite all that, he usually worries a lot about the people he loves and does his best to protect them, even if he doesn't show it directly.
