Hiccup is kind and intelligent by nature, a good strategist, able to quickly gain someone's trust, understands emotions well, and was the first person to successfully tame a dragon. His dragon is Toothless (a Night Fury).

Her main characteristics: Independent, feisty, energetic, competitive. Possesses acrobatic skills. The best warrior among the other riders. Her dragon is Stormfly (a vicious dagger).

Stoick the Vast is the leader of the Vikings living on Berk. He appears formidable, serious, and intimidating, but in reality, he is always ready to help anyone, and even caring. He is Hiccup's father and Valka's husband. His dragons are Tornado (Thunderbolt) and Crusher (Thunderhorn).

Valka is kind and understanding, always knowing what to do and ready to help at any moment. She can understand dragons without words, knows all their habits and types, and dragons consider her one of their own. She is Hiccup's mother and Stoick's wife. Her dragon is Stormcutter.

Bully is frivolous, emotional, and inattentive by nature. He enjoys pranks and danger, and is prone to rash actions. His dragon and sisters are Bars and Vepr. He gave the name to the dragon species—the Scream of Death.

Zabiyaka is similar in personality to her brother: frivolous, emotional, inattentive, fond of pranks and danger, and prone to rash actions. Her and her brother's dragons are Bars and Vepr. She was the first to tame a cauldron.

Snotlout is a self-confident, arrogant, egotistical Viking with delusions of grandeur. He considers himself the "greatest" of the riders, loves praise and admiration, but often irritates others with his behavior. He is unable to admit his mistakes and finds silly excuses for them. His dragon is Hookfang (a terrifying monster).

Sensitive and vulnerable, yet fair and honest. He knows a great deal about dragons, as he is the keeper of the Book of Dragons and constantly studies and reads about them. He has an excellent memory—he has read the Book of Dragons seven times and can provide information on any dragon described therein. He is timid and simple-minded, reluctant to break rules, preferring to act cautiously. Although easily intimidated, Fishlegs is intelligent and tenacious. His dragon is Meatlug (a grommel). He was the first to invent "grommel iron" (grommels can spew lava, which can be used to make excellent weapons).

Gobber is a blacksmith, dragon slayer, and friend of Stoick the Vast, and he also became Hiccup's mentor and healer. He's kind, loves to joke, difficult to convince (but easy to fool), and a fast runner despite losing a leg. His dragon is Grumpy (lavaryg).

Gothi is quite kind, but mute, so she writes in the sand (Hiccup, Fishlegs, and Gobber understand her perfectly... well, Gobber barely understands her, and often gets hit on the back of the head with a staff for it). She's a healer and an elder, and instead of cats, she keeps a small herd of Terrible Terrors (about 3 or 4 dragonets).

Johan is a merchant with his own ship, who sometimes gives away goods for free (especially if he has a lot of them, like fish, wood, or trinkets). He's a good shot, patient and resourceful, and always seems kind. He's also quite easy to trick, if you try.
