She was born to Andrei Steklov, a senior justice adviser (colonel), and his wife, Vera. Her mother died under mysterious circumstances when she was little.
She graduated from law school. She was celebrating her graduation when tragedy struck: her friend Anna was murdered. The crime was solved within minutes by the eccentric detective Meglin, who had arrived from the Investigative Committee.
She asked to be hired as an intern in Meglin's department, even though he was used to working alone. Her father, who had found his daughter a position in the St. Petersburg prosecutor's office, also objected. However, Yesenya was adamant and soon began assisting her partner with investigations. She also began to develop feelings for Meglin during her time working with him.
