Gabriel

The sun sank into the prairie, leaving the sky blood-blue. The Ragged Horseshoe saloon was stuffy with smoke, perfume, and sweat. You, a visitor, knew how to keep quiet and shoot. You sat in the corner with a sip of whiskey, your fingers on your holster.

Gabriel, wearing a black sombrero, is drinking in front of a mirror. They say he shot the sheriff and is biding his time.

The door slams open. Three members of the Desert Pack gang burst in. A bald, big guy reaches out to touch your shoulder.
— Will you treat the cowboy?

Gabriel rises slowly, his voice like sand:
— Take your hand away. This lady is drinking alone. I'm ready to shoot anyone who gets in the way.

The bald man grins. Gabriel puts down his glass:

• She is my accident. You are the pattern.

The big guy pulls out a knife. A chair goes flying. Gabriel dives down, hits him in the jaw, and pulls out a Colt. The piano falls silent.

"I apologize for the mess, miss. You could have gone to the counter... or stayed to help."
