Although it wasn't immediately apparent, Hiashi noticed that Hanabi displayed far more potential than her older sister, Hinata, and was better suited to the role of Hyūga clan heir. [4] Her rapid growth greatly impressed the entire clan, leading many to question whether she should be the heir even before it was officially proposed. Years later, her talent was further demonstrated when, while continuing to train to become the heir, she also became the teacher of Team 15, showcasing her ability to multitask.

From a young age, Hanabi displayed strong instincts for hand-to-hand combat. Despite not receiving the same intensive training from her father as her older sister, Hanabi soon managed to fight on par with Hinata thanks to her individual training. In the anime, she managed to defeat Hinata in their training duel (though this was partly due to Hinata's reluctance to hurt her sister). [3] Between her innate talent and Hiashi's rigorous training, Hanabi became highly proficient in the Gentle Fist. In the anime, during a duel with Boruto, she demonstrated considerable evasion and accuracy, effortlessly dodging and parrying all of his attacks along with his shadow clones. [8] She could also perform her clan's advanced hidden techniques, such as the Heavenly Spinning Eight Trigrams Palm and the Eight Trigrams Void Palm. [8]

As a member of the Hyūga clan, Hanabi possesses the Byakugan, a kekkei genkai dōjutsu. While it is a common trait in her clan, her father emphasizes that Hanabi's is very powerful, almost as powerful as her cousin Neji's. [12] Hanabi herself is also very confident in her Byakugan, stating that her perception is as good as any adult Hyūga's. [13] Toneri Ōtsutsuki described her Byakugan as "very pure" and specifically focused on it to awaken the Tenseigan. [13] When activated, it grants her a nearly 360° field of vision (except for a small blind spot), X-ray vision, and the ability to see chakra with enough accuracy to target the chakra pathway system.

Hanabi's character wasn't developed much in the manga. In the anime, Hanabi appears to be a quiet, polite, and respectful girl, though she seems to open up to people a bit more easily than her sister. Unlike Hinata, Hanabi is more self-assured. In the anime, from a young age, Hanabi adored her older sister, always wanting to spend time with Hinata and be near her. She was also saddened to learn of the harsh conditions Hinata had to endure. When Hanabi learned of the harsh nature of life within the Hyūga clan and that she was expected to lead them, she gradually hardened, similar to Neji's original ideas about predestined fate and its inescapable nature, determined not to let her clan down as its future leader. [3] After seeing her sister surpass everyone's expectations and become so strong, Hanabi regained much of her former cheerful demeanor. [ 5 ] In the anime as well, she came to have great respect for the social outcast, Naruto. This was achieved not only by changing Neji and Hinata's perspectives for the better by inspiring them, but also by convincing herself that she could forge her own destiny.

She also supports Hinata's feelings for Naruto, as shown two years after the war. Hanabi is also described as a "stylish young woman with extravagant tastes." [6] Upon reaching adulthood, Hanabi matured considerably, taking her duties as a jōnin sensei and future clan leader very seriously. She is mentioned as being a very strict teacher in the former. She is shown to adore her niece and nephew, Himawari and Boruto, confiding in them when they came to visit the Hyūga estate. [7] At the same time, she encourages them to be independent and to ask for help with their problems only after they have tried everything else. Hanabi is a young woman with long, black hair (depicted as dark brown in the anime) that reaches her mid-back, with long, side-swept bangs and a strand that falls over her face. She also has large, white eyes, a trait common to all members of her clan. In the anime, her eyes have a lilac tint. Overall, she resembles her father. In Part I, she was seen wearing a blue, sleeveless V-neck top with chainmail armor underneath, blue shorts, and sandals. Her hair reached her mid-back.

During Part II, Hanabi cut her hair into an asymmetrical bob, framing her face with bangs that fell below her chin. She wore a modified version of her original outfit: a tan vest with white wristbands on both hands and shinobi sandals with white straps around her ankles. At the time of Pain's attack, she wore a light yellow kimono with light purple painted textures, an orange-red obi with a green cord, white tabi socks, and sandals. Hanabi also wore a pink flower-shaped hair clip on her left side.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, her hair has grown considerably and is tied back in a low ponytail with a white ribbon. It now reaches well below her hips, and she has two shorter strands in the front with pink ribbons at the ends. She wears a long-sleeved tan kimono with an orange-red flame design, a matching knee-length skirt, and a white obi around her waist.

Years later, Hanabi has grown considerably and become thinner. She now wears her hair with shorter bangs that reach her chin, framing her face, while the rest of her hair, gathered in a ponytail, reaches her knees. She wears a yellow kimono blouse and a traditional long red skirt fastened with a simple white obi.

Hanabi is the youngest daughter of the Hyūga clan leader, Hiashi Hyūga. In the anime, although she always admired her older sister, Hinata, and wished to spend more time with her, Hinata's duties as the clan's future heir made it difficult for the two sisters to have quality time together. Seeing Hinata, both strong and kind, Hanabi aspired to be like her. Later, Hanabi witnessed her sister's training, only to see Neji attempting to harm her, who was stopped by Hiashi, who activated his cursed seal. Shortly after, her grandfather approached her and explained that the Hyūga clan sometimes has to go to extremes to protect its secrets and that everyone has a predetermined path in life that they must follow. Hanabi also spied on Hinata when she would leave the house to watch Naruto Uzumaki from afar, leading her to wonder why Hinata was so obsessed with the social outcast. During training sessions between Hanabi and her sister, Hanabi's talent began to shine, astonishing everyone by nearly matching her older sister's skill despite the age difference. Later, when Hinata's progress began to be questioned, their grandfather suggested training Hanabi to be the heir, and eventually, a duel was held between Hanabi and Hinata to decide the future of their clan. While Hinata found an opening to win the fight, she hesitated to attack her sister, allowing Hanabi to counterattack and win the duel, much to Hanabi's dismay at having hurt her sister. [3]

Finally, as Hanabi demonstrated more talent and confidence than her older sister Hinata, her father decided to make her the clan's heir,[1] and focused his rigorous training regimen on her instead of her sister, whose training he considered a waste of time.[4] While Hanabi continued to train with her father, believing in her grandfather's words that everyone is bound to an immutable destiny
