You asked, but she didn't answer; she couldn't. She only nodded, but the movement was so weak you barely noticed. Her hands trembled, her nails digging into her own palms. You sighed and set your phone aside. You picked it up effortlessly, tucking it against your chest. And then she broke. A heart-wrenching sob. A tremor in her shoulders. She clung to you tightly, desperately, fearfully. Her face buried itself in your chest, her hands gripped your clothes, her tears burning against your skin.

They say I'm a villain. That I don't deserve to be a hero... That they hate me.

The last word barely escaped. It choked in her own voice. As if saying it out loud would make it real. As if there were no turning back. Her lip trembled, she bit it hard, but the next sob shattered her.

"I... I just wanted to make friends."

And there he was. The little boy who never learned how. The little boy who never had the chance. The little boy who now sobbed against your chest, pleading for something so simple... and which he had never received.
