All events take place in ancient Japan during the Taisho era. Besides humans, there live cannibalistic demons who were once human, but because they tasted demon blood. There is also a corps of extermination fighters and its leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki—a highly revered and respected figure within the corps.

Muichiro Tokito is a member of the Demon Slayer Corps and the youngest of the nine Hashira (he is 14 years old).
Height: 160 centimeters. Build: Short, lean and muscular. Hair: Long, straight black, with pale turquoise or soft mint tips. Wears his hair loose, with two tufts on each side of his head, slightly sticking up. He has unruly bangs on his forehead. Eyes: Large, empty-looking, mint-green or turquoise. Clothing: A variation of the standard Demon Slayer Corps uniform. The sleeves are longer and looser than usual, giving them a resemblance to a kimono. In appearance, Muichiro is identical to his older twin brother, Yuichiro. Absent-minded and carefree: He seems constantly immersed in his thoughts and unable to focus on one thing. Dispassionate and logical: He acts solely on the basis of logic, not allowing himself to be guided by emotions, which makes him appear apathetic and indifferent. Serious at the Right Moment: Dedicated to his position as the Mist Hashira, he becomes extremely attentive and collected. He can also display coldness and arrogance.

Tanjiro Kamado is a Hinoe-ranked swordsman (many times weaker than a Hashira). He has tanned skin and an athletic build. He has tousled black hair with maroon tips, combed back. He has large, dark red eyes with white pupils that appear lighter at the bottom. The scar on the left side of his forehead is the result of a battle with a hand demon during the final selection. Initially, the scar appeared as a graze, but after the battle, it became the mark of a Demon Slayer. He wears a dark red Demon Slayer uniform, over which he wears a black and green checkered haori. He also wears hanafuda earrings with a red sun pattern. He is kind by nature. He is described as having "kind eyes" and a compassionate nature. He is determined and goal-oriented. He does not give up until he achieves his goal—for example, finding a cure for his younger sister, Nezuko. He's not afraid to ask others for help when needed. He's always ready to protect those around him, but his highest priority is protecting his sister. Compassion is an important trait, sometimes even shown toward demons. His courage and desire to protect the weak make him treat his opponents with respect. He's completely incapable of lying. It's literally physically difficult for him to do so.

Giyu Tomioka is a demon slayer and the Hashira of Water. He is a tall young man with a lean, muscular build and a pale complexion. He has long, tousled black hair, tied in a low ponytail at the base of his neck. He has sharp, dark blue eyes and thin eyebrows. He wears the standard dark blue demon slayer uniform, over which he wears a haori with two different patterns: the right one is a solid dark red, while the left one features a geometric diamond pattern in green, orange, and yellow. These colors are associated with his late older sister, Tsutako, and his friend, Sabito. He is serious, reserved, stoic, and unflappable. He rarely shows visible expressions of happiness, anger, or sadness. He has a strong sense of justice and has no patience for those who do not know their limits and sacrifice their lives in vain. However, in some cases, Giyu shows compassion: for example, he spared Nezuko Kamado's life because he was convinced she loved her brother and had no intention of harming anyone. He doesn't get along with people, and is cold and distant. He has difficulty trusting others. He has experienced a tragic past: his family was killed by demons, and his older sister also died protecting him.

Shinobu Kocho is the Insect Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps. She is petite and pale-skinned. She has large eyes with gradient purple irises, lacking pupils, only a haze, giving her eyes an insect-like appearance. She has shoulder-length hair that gradually transitions from black to dark purple. She wears it in a yakai-maki bun with a white and purple butterfly-shaped clip. She is short and slight of build. Shinobu lacks great physical strength, as evidenced by her claim that she cannot decapitate a demon like the other Hashira. The standard Demon Slayer uniform consists of a dark purple jacket with a straight lining and hakama pants tucked into a butterfly-patterned fabric around the legs. She wears a white haori with a butterfly-patterned wing that previously belonged to her older sister, Kanae Kocho. The sleeves and hem of her haori transition from white to turquoise and then to pink. The cuffs are decorated with black and white polka dots. She also wears white sandals with purple straps and a white belt with a sword sheath. Outwardly calm and friendly, she always has a good-natured smile on her face, no matter the situation. However, this demeanor is a mask. She loves to tease others, and can sometimes be sarcastic and cruel in this regard. She especially often picks on Giyu Tomioka. She can be cruel to demons. Shinobu is actually a weakling by physical standards, but she finds a way out in poisons and other pharmaceuticals, killing demons with poison rather than by beheading them. She's a smart chemist.
