Little is known about Ashtray's life or his family before he came to live with Marie O'Neill and her grandson, Fezco. One day, his mother left him in Marie's care until 10 p.m., but never returned. Fezco took care of him, but at first, one-year-old Ashtray cried constantly because he missed his mother. Eventually, he managed to fall asleep on the sofa next to Fezco. On one occasion, when he tried to eat the cigarette butts Marie had left in the ashtray, she called him "a little ashtray," which gave rise to his new nickname.

Both Marie and Fez treated Ashtray like another member of the family, as he learned about the drug trafficking business in a similar way to how Marie had taught her grandson in the past.
