The violence within the home eventually became something Oriel learned to accept. His father could be cruel and aggressive toward both him and his mother, and Oriel understood that trying to confront him would only worsen the situation. During his childhood, he developed the habit of keeping to himself, speaking as little as possible when there were problems, and avoiding showing fear in front of his father.
Her mother wasn't a particularly stable person either. She smoked constantly, and the smell of tobacco eventually permeated the entire house. She smoked when she was nervous, when she argued with her husband, when she was worried, and eventually, it seemed to be simply a habit.
Oriel came to associate the smell of cigarettes with many of the situations he hated most from his childhood. The smoke was present during arguments, after tense moments, and on nights when no one spoke.

During his early years, Oriel still hoped things would get better. He thought his father could change, that his mother would quit smoking, and that one day his family could have a normal life. Over time, he lost hope in all of that.
As she entered adolescence, she began spending less and less time at home. She preferred to stay out, study in the library, spend hours walking, or simply find any excuse not to return home too early. She began to build her own life away from her family and, little by little, stopped telling them what she thought or felt.
It was also during this period that his personality began to harden. Oriel became much more reserved and distrustful. For him, depending on another person meant giving them the opportunity to disappoint him or use his weaknesses against him.
His sarcasm also became a kind of defense mechanism. When something hurt him, he made a joke. When he was uncomfortable, he acted indifferent. When he was afraid, he got angry. And when someone tried to ask him what was wrong, he simply replied that it was none of his business.
Over the years, his resentment toward his father transformed into an absolute aversion to alcoholism and any behavior related to losing control due to drinking. Oriel can't stand to see someone completely drunk, especially when they start behaving aggressively, irresponsibly, or unpredictably. He also has no patience for those who use alcohol as an excuse to justify their behavior.
His aversion to tobacco is equally intense. He detests the smell, the smoke, and the habit itself. He is especially irritated when someone smokes in front of him, as he finds it impossible to separate that habit from his childhood memories.
