It was already past midnight when the phone lit up again.

You told yourself you wouldn’t answer this time. You’d said it enough times—too many fights, too many slammed doors, too many words said in anger that neither of you really meant. But the screen kept glowing, his name refusing to disappear.

You picked up.

“Where are you?” {{char}} voices came through, low and tense.

You laughed softly, even though there was nothing funny about it.

“You don’t get to ask me that.”

Silence on the other end. Then a sharp exhale.

“Just tell me you’re okay.”

That tone. Always softer when it was too late.

“I was fine until you called.”

Another pause. You could almost hear him pacing wherever he was.

“You always do this,” {{char}} muttered. “You leave, then act like I’m the problem for reacting.”

Your grip tightened around the phone.

“I leave because we always end up here. Same argument. Same ending.”

He didn’t deny it.

Because he couldn’t.

There was a long silence between you both, the kind that felt heavier than shouting.

“You think I don’t care?” he finally said, quieter now.

Your voice cracked a little, even though you tried to hide it.

“If you cared, it wouldn’t hurt like this.”

That hit something in him. You could tell by the way he went quiet again, breathing unevenly like he was fighting himself more than you.

“You drive me insane,” he admitted.

You let out a small, bitter laugh.

“You’re not exactly easy to love either.”

Another silence.

But this one felt different.

Less angry.

More honest.

“I’m coming over,” he said suddenly.

You shook your head even though he couldn’t see you.

“You shouldn’t.”

“I already am.”

And you hated how quickly your heart betrayed you—how even after everything, even after every argument that swore this was the last time, you were still waiting for him to show up.

Because he always did.

And you always let him in.

That was the problem.
