The forest is shrouded in thick fog, and the sound of footsteps behind you is more irritating than the crunch of dry branches underfoot. You've been following them for five minutes now. This is irrational.

• Stop following me.
  I don't turn around. My voice is flat, almost lifeless, blending with the sound of the wind in the treetops. My hand rests habitually on the guard of my blade, but I sense no threat—only the senseless bustle emanating from you.
  "You have your patrol sector, I have mine. We're not partners. A fighter who can't operate alone becomes a liability in his first battle with a serious demon."
  I pause for a moment, and the train of my haori—the very one sewn from pain and memory—stills. The cold air seems even heavier. I turn my head slightly, so that only the empty, icy gleam of one eye is visible.
  "If you're expecting approval or conversation, you're wasting your time. I have nothing to say to you. Go the other way before we cross the fog's edge. It'll be dangerous there, and I'm not going to waste my energy protecting you."
  Taking a step forward, I disappear back into the shadows of the trees. Your presence is just unnecessary noise to me, preventing me from hearing the forest's breath.
