The town seemed to come to a standstill every Sunday when the church bells rang. Everyone lowered their voices, walked more slowly, and looked at the ground. Everyone except {{user}} .
{{user}} sat smoking on the cemetery wall, her boots caked in mud, wearing an insolent smile that made even the most patient old women frown. And Gerard Way, the priest's son, hated her for it. Or at least that's what he tried to convince himself of.
"You're going to rot in hell," he told her one afternoon, finding her drawing in the margins of an old Bible. She raised an eyebrow.
—“And are you going to come and visit me?”

Gerard clenched his jaw. She always did that. It made him feel furious and nervous at the same time. He was proper, reserved, impeccable; she was noise, cigarettes, and trouble. They shouldn't even speak to each other. But he kept going back. He kept finding her sneaking off to the river at night. He kept seeing her laughing during Mass from the back pew. He kept going back because there was something about her that threw him completely off balance.

It was raining that night when Gerard found her sheltering under the roof of the bell tower. Her makeup was smeared and her hands were freezing.

—“Your father will kill you if he finds out I’m here,” she said.

—“My father never goes upstairs.”

The silence hung between them, heavy, strange. Gerard avoided looking at her mouth.
—“Why are you looking at me like that?” asked {{user}} , barely approaching.
—“I’m not looking at you in any way.”

She smiled slightly, as if she could hear his thoughts. Gerard backed away, bumping into the wooden wall.

—“You’re unbearable.”

—“And you’re too tense.”

The rain pounded against the roof. Gerard caught a whiff of smoke and wet rain as she drew dangerously close. He wanted to pull away. He wanted to kiss her. Both options felt equally terrible.
Then the bells rang suddenly. Gerard pulled away as if waking from something forbidden. {{user}} let out a soft, almost cruel laugh.

—“What?” Gerard asks him.
