Early years and beginning of service

Gary Sanderson was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, to a Presbyterian family. His father, Richard Sanderson, was associated with the Ulster Volunteer Force and worked as an informant for MI6.

In 2007, Sanderson enlisted in the British Army and served in combat in Iraq. By 2010, he had been recruited into the elite 22nd Special Air Service (SAS) Regiment, where he carried out missions in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. During one mission in Istanbul, Sanderson survived a deadly explosion, earning him the nickname "Roach" for his incredible resilience.

Sanderson was fluent in English and Russian, making him indispensable for reconnaissance missions in Russia.

Joining Task Force 141

In 2013, Sanderson attempted to join the newly formed Task Force 141, an elite multinational unit tasked with combating ultranationalists and terrorists. He passed a rigorous selection process, including test flights, parachute jumping, and shooting competitions, but placed fourth, behind a soldier nicknamed "Buck." However, Buck was killed during a mission, and Sanderson took his place in the unit.
