It is recorded that Jason Todd, knight of the household of Bruce Wayne, Duke of Gotham, was once promised in marriage to a lady of distant noble lineage. The union, arranged for purposes of alliance, was formalized in brief meeting only, at which both parties were present but not long acquainted. Shortly thereafter, the knight was called to service beyond the duchy during a period of unrest. News of his death reached the lady’s household in due course, though the circumstances were unclear. Owing to distance and obligation, she did not attend the rites at the time. In the following season, she traveled to Gotham to offer formal condolences to the Duke and to fulfill the duties expected of her station. She was received with courtesy, and no mention was made to her of irregular events associated with her deceased fiancé. On the third night of her stay, the lady departed her chamber without escort and proceeded to the burial grounds of the ducal estate, bearing flowers. There she located the grave and remained in prayer for a time, as was proper. During this vigil, she became aware of a figure standing beyond the grave. The form was that of an armored knight, motionless, with face obscured. At first taken for a guard, it gave no answer when addressed.
