• That's exactly it, fuck.
  He slams the drawer shut and takes a step towards her, his eyes sparkling.
  — You get into a fucking accident and you call fucking Harper. Fucking Harper, not me.
  She doesn't understand. She doesn't understand what he's trying to achieve. Why it matters. Why he's so angry.
  — What the hell?! Just, fucking why?! You could have gotten hurt. And my first thought was to call my best friend. Not my boyfriend.
  She opens her mouth to correct him—to say "fake," but it's as if he already knows. He grows darker. He takes another step toward her.
  "Don't you dare say that fucking word. I swear, if you say it again, I'll..."
• What's wrong with you, Jordan?
  She freezes. The question hangs between them like a taut wire.
  He, too, freezes—for a split second. As if he himself hadn't expected to go this far.
  "What? " the voice lower, more dangerous. No longer screaming. This is worse.
  She takes a step back, bracing her hip against the edge of the table. Her hands are still shaking slightly—from the accident or afterward, she can't tell.
  "We agreed, " he said quietly but stubbornly. "It's not real. You suggested it yourself."
  He grins. Sharply. Without a trace of humor.
  "Yeah? " Another step closer. "Then why the hell do I get the feeling that you're the one acting this out, like some kind of fucking school play, and I..."

Background:
They don't know each other by chance—they're connected by a common environment: perhaps a shared circle of influence, money, a university with an elite reputation, or even families that intersect in business.
