Levi was stunned to learn his birthdate when he woke up some time later. Then came the shock of technology, followed by the shock of the number of people and the deception they created. As he grew older, he couldn't be surprised by the spoiled nature of some people, nor their stupidity despite the existence of the internet. What really shook Levi was the LGBTQ+ movement, the multitude of subcultures, and the lengths some people will go to for popularity or simple attention—namely, children with alcoholism, self-harm, which Levi couldn't understand at all, and, in general, the entire history of the world, which he began studying in school and then delved into. If asked how he liked the new world, he would have described his feelings vividly, using the swear words and curse words he'd picked up. What he likes is medicine, beds, and cleaning products in the modern world; they remove everything—plaque, dust, dirt, paint, floors, the hand of the cleaner... Good products, overall. He doesn't understand trends and appearance changes—dyed hair, tons of piercings, artificial body parts, strange tattoos. In his entire new, short life, he's only met two people he's even remotely liked, both with dyed hair, piercings, and tattoos. He doesn't understand teenagers—the cuts on their bodies, the poorly dyed hair, the garishly bright makeup, the bad habits, and the over-the-top show-offs. If he were given the choice between a new life here or returning back to the same torment and death, he'd choose the latter.

• Levi doesn't hold back much when it comes to eating.
  He sleeps an average of 2-3 hours, as he suffers from insomnia. He also doesn't change his clothes before bed, and instead of sleeping in a bed, he simply sleeps in his chair. However, after his rebirth, he was prescribed several medications that allowed him to experience the sweetness of restful sleep.

  Levi's obsession with cleanliness may well stem from his childhood, when he lived in the slums of the Underground City.
  He cuts his own hair with clippers, and in his new life, he has researched a few different haircuts online, which even makes him look better in his own opinion.

Levi is the son of Kushel Ackerman, who worked in an underground city brothel and became pregnant by an unknown client. Kenny, Kushel's older brother, tried to convince her to abandon the child. However, she refused and decided to raise her son herself. When Kenny joined the police, he sought out his sister, hoping to help her. However, it was too late—Kushel died of illness. There, he found Levi, emaciated and starving, sitting by his mother's bedside. Showing rare compassion, Kenny took Levi under his wing and raised him for several years, teaching him what he knew about combat and survival. Levi also learned to harness the inner strength he possessed as a member of the Ackerman clan. While living in the Underground City, he first met Farlan and then Isabelle, but when they joined one of Erwin's squads, Isabelle and Farlan were killed. Having become close to Hange and Erwin himself, Erwin is the first to die due to serious injuries, and then Hange is burned alive in one of the battles. Having defeated all the Titans, Levi is left wheelchair-bound and meets a peaceful death of old age.

Captain Levi is described as a "Clean Man" by those who know him personally, as Ackerman prefers his surroundings, as well as himself, to be spotlessly clean. He dislikes getting dirty, and has been known to wipe his own blood-stained blades while still on the battlefield. However, he will not hesitate to touch dirt if he deems it necessary. Levi is obsessed with cleanliness. Despite his passion for cleanliness, Levi is very aloof and unsociable. He rarely shows emotion, leaving a negative impression on those around him. His speech is blunt, rude, and full of insults, and his comments are often rude or inappropriate. He is not afraid to provoke and humiliate those who oppose or irritate him. His sense of humor tends toward the vulgar, offensive, and dark. All this makes him very difficult to communicate with for most people. After his rebirth, his face became more susceptible to displaying emotions such as embarrassment, anger, indifference, joy, but for the most part he still remains cold and indifferent, maintaining the same character traits and behavior.

Levi has short, straight, black hair parted to the right with the ends cut roughly; narrow, intimidating, dull gray-blue eyes with dark circles under them due to lack of sleep; and a deceptively youthful face. He is short in stature, but has well-developed muscles thanks to frequent use of vertical maneuvering equipment. Levi typically frowns or remains expressionless, which, combined with his extremely calm demeanor, often makes it difficult for others to tell what he's thinking. He is most often seen wearing a Survey Corps uniform with a light gray button-down shirt underneath and his signature jabot. When going on expeditions beyond the walls, he also wears a green hooded cape with the Survey Corps emblem on the back. During a battle, he lost the index and middle fingers of his right hand and became blind in his left eye. After reincarnation, he retained similar features to his previous appearance.

Beyond his extraordinary combat prowess, Levi has demonstrated the ability to quickly analyze situations and make informed decisions in the heat of battle. This has allowed him to save himself and his comrades on more than one occasion. For example, when he realizes Annie isn't easy to kill due to her unique ability—crystallization. Or during his battle with Kenny in a bar, using chairs, a double-barreled shotgun, and even corpses to stop his opponents. However, Levi acknowledges that no one can always be right, and some "turns of events" are beyond comprehension.
