The first character Hiccup was willing to attack and even kill was Alvin the Traitor. Originally, Hiccup was more interested in avoiding him, but as Alvin's schemes increasingly encroached upon everything Hiccup cared about, Hiccup seemed to harden into a difficult resolve. He was seen ordering Toothless to kill Alvin when he threatened to throw Astrid off a cliff. In the Dragons: Riders of Berk finale, Hiccup and Toothless even framed Alvin in an attempt to kill him after he had captured, threatened, and deeply insulted them both. Although they failed in this attempt, Alvin remained one of the few people Hiccup was willing to allow Toothless to kill, but he relented when Alvin abandoned his attempts to destroy Berk and instead became an ally. Overall, Hiccup is an intelligent person who is naturally generous and innocent. In the film's sequel, it's shown that he and Toothless have become "adrenaline junkies," performing stunts like freefall. He has a charitable and kind nature that allows him to see the good in everyone. He has especially shown that he cares deeply for Toothless, his parents, Stoick, and Valka.

Among the other teenage Vikings, Hiccup initially seems out of place, mainly because he's a poor fighter and rather scrawny for a Viking. However, as he becomes more skilled at fighting dragons, they begin to pay more attention to him, some even trying to talk to him. Despite this, Hiccup remains shy, and although he seems to enjoy it somewhat, he prefers to be with Toothless, knowing that Toothless gained all his fame through lies. He also tends to be sarcastic, with a dry sense of humor that can sometimes put him at odds with the other Vikings in his tribe. It also seems that Hiccup likes to mask his fear with this sarcasm and dry humor. Due to his shyness, he used to stutter when speaking to some of the other Vikings, especially when his father was angry with him.

Despite his many virtues and clear leadership abilities, Hiccup is not without flaws. He is quite prone to letting his insecurities cloud his judgment and affect his actions; in the film, his desperation for acceptance from his tribe, and his father in particular, leads him to regularly attempt to kill dragons alongside the villagers, only to end up doing more harm than good due to his clumsiness. In the Dragons: Rise of Berk series, his mistaken belief that Stoick still doesn't accept him leads him to lead the other Vikings on a potentially dangerous treasure hunt to prove his worth in "Portrait of Hiccup as a Strong Man." His innate sympathy and tendency to give others the benefit of the doubt cause him to overtrust strangers, leaving him vulnerable to manipulation and deception by more dishonest characters, such as Heather and Mildew, on more than one occasion. In the episode "Thaw Festival," Hiccup displays a hyper-competitive side of his personality when he begins to score victories over Snotlout.

Despite his physical flaws, Hiccup does his best to succeed as a Viking. He is intelligent and is constantly creating inventions for various uses throughout the first film, including a ball launcher, a prosthetic dragon tail and saddle, and a riding vest. Hiccup is willing to kill a dragon to gain some recognition in the village. He often does not think things through and is more determined to gain the recognition of his peers than the commands of others, which often causes problems for the rest of the tribe and himself. Despite this, Hiccup shows great aptitude for being a leader and strategist: he leads his combat dragon to his classmates in battle, wisely using his friends' strengths in the battle against the Red Death. Hiccup also has very good observational skills that come in handy during his time with Toothless and during dragon training. For example, you can hypothesize that dragons have a natural disdain for eel when your own dragon companion refuses to eat one and use this to successfully drive back a Cremallerus Espantosus later.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the main protagonist of DreamWorks' How to Train Your Dragon animated franchise. He is the son of Valka and the late chief of Berk, Stoick the Vast, making him the heir and later chief of the tribe. He is 15 years old in the first film and the first three specials, 16 in "Dragons of Berk," 18 in "The Origin of Dragon Racing," 19 in "Race to the Edge," 20 in How to Train Your Dragon 2, 21 in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, and 31 in the finale and "Coming Home." His dragon is a Night Fury named Toothless.

In the finale of the last movie and in Homecoming, it is revealed that they have a daughter named Zephyr Haddock and a younger son named Nuffink Haddock.
