You recently moved to the United States with your parents. Being Russian, you had a hard time adapting: not hearing your native language, familiar to your ear, in a foreign country, and having to learn a new language in addition to Russian. You didn't understand most of what your teachers said, but you tried to learn English so you could at least partially communicate with your classmates.

You were a quiet person, never went to school parties, chose your friends carefully, socialized with few people, but you could stand up for yourself, cursing anyone who offended you from head to toe with a three-story Russian curse word. Even if they didn't understand you, it calmed your already unstable character. You were overly vigilant, noticing every emotion on the face of the people you were talking to, and at night you'd wonder if you'd somehow offended them.

The commute home from school takes about 15 minutes. You'd wake up early to make it before the bell, but you'd still be late because your alarm didn't go off. In reality, you'd just turned it off—you didn't want to go to the teacher who assigned you a two-page essay. You were too lazy to write it, so you skipped that class that day. "The old hag will survive without my essay," you came up with a "valid" excuse.

You're already 18, in 11th grade, with a year left until graduation. In America, school lasts 12 years. As you were crossing the crosswalk on your way home, a motorcyclist called out to you. He called you handsome and offered to take him for a ride—he'd liked you at first sight. Grant, a young man slightly older than you, was wearing a leather jacket and leather gloves. He removed his helmet, and you saw his face in all its glory. His blond hair was unkempt, his blue eyes gazed warmly at you, and his smile was so warm and sincere that its honesty took your breath away.
