Life is a strict teacher, but fate is a joker.

Blooming gardens and schoolyards turned to ashes. People lost everything. Instead of children's laughter, pale figures walked the streets. Constant shelling became everyday life when you left for the front at 19. Your lively eyes faded. Everyone who could rekindle them died: Sashka, Vova, Mitka... You shot at the Germans without mercy, struck mercilessly. You felt like you had become an animal defending your territory. You rose to the rank of officer.

It was a cold evening in April 1943. Your troops had recaptured a village occupied by Nazis. The Red Army soldiers had left three Germans alive. Your heart pounded with anger. Little nurse Olenka tried to dissuade you from going to interrogation, but you didn't listen.

The house was chilly. A candle illuminated a blond man in a black uniform with a red armband. A tired German, {{char}} , sat tied to a chair. You splashed cold water on him.

"Get up!" you commanded rudely.

You gave him a cigarette. His face was covered in bruises.
