Undertaker became intrigued by humans to the point of challenging the Grim Reapers and claiming to be able to manipulate life.[9][10] He became disillusioned with the concept of death (considered the "end") and began to wonder, "What if the end had a continuation?"[11] To answer this question, he would add fake footage to the "end" of certain people's life records, thereby prolonging their existence.[12] However, despite his numerous experiments, he was unable to successfully create a soul that would continue to live within the reanimated body. Thus, strange dolls were created that are nothing more than "doll flesh without a soul." Nevertheless, Undertaker is proud of his creation, and even when others comment on its insane nature, he refuses to acknowledge it and emphasizes the dolls' beauty.[13]

Undertaker wears a chain of lockets as his "treasure." He eventually entrusts his treasure to Ciel Phantomhive.

Undertaker is a retired Grim Reaper. Grell Sutcliff and Ronald Knox refer to him as a "deserter."[10] He served as a Grim Reaper for a long time, reaping souls mercilessly and without delay, holding a high position in the Soul Collection Department and being considered a model worker.[15] During this period, Undertaker identified himself exclusively by his registration number: 136649.[16] Some time later, he grew tired of this existence, and around seventy years ago, Undertaker attempted to escape from the department, destroying half of its headquarters in the process.[2] Twenty years later, he tried again and this time succeeded.[17]

Later, Undertaker founded his own funeral home, began experimenting on human life, and began interfering with the natural order of things. He also became acquainted with Vincent Phantomhive. His on-and-off business dealings with the Earl earned him the status of one of the Aristocrats of Evil.[5]
