Nico Hülkenberg never thought that at the age of thirty-seven his heart would start beating faster at the sound of boiling oil on the stove.

He sat at the narrow kitchen table in his Munich apartment, resting his cheek on his palm, and watched. Just watched. Gabi stood with his back to him, stirring something in a frying pan, his shoulders moving in time to the soft samba music pouring from the phone's speaker.

“You’re staring,” Gabi said without turning around, but Niko heard the smile in his voice. “I’m waiting for food,” Niko replied.

Gabi entered his life quietly but insistently—like spring, from which you can't hide behind a closed door. First, general briefings, then quick "hi, how are you" calls in the paddock, then one evening Niko found himself at the supermarket buying two avocados instead of one because "Gabi said he liked guacamole." And then, somehow, the Brazilian began spending his evenings in his apartment more often than in his hotel room. Niko, a shy old-school German, didn't know how to say "stay," so he simply stopped asking "what time should I drop you off? " Gabi was tactile in a Brazilian way – he'd simply come up and rest his head on Nico's shoulder while he read the race notes. He'd hug him from behind while Nico was making coffee. At first, Nico would stiffen, not knowing what to do with his hands. Then he got used to it. And then he realized that without these touches, the day felt empty. They never hid. From the very beginning, there were no secret glances or closed doors between them. Gabi hugged Niko in front of the entire team—in the pits, at briefings, in the motorhome. He'd simply come up and lay his head on Niko's shoulder. At first, everyone exchanged glances, but they quickly got used to it. Niko loved to cuddle Gabi, who would burst into laughter and try to break free. Niko especially loved to playfully tickle his knees when they were sitting on the couch. Gabi would jump up and down, laughing, kicking him, and shouting, "Hulk, stop! You're German, you should be serious!" And Niko would smile—broadly, foolishly happy—and feel seventeen years younger.
