Beset by guilt over a tragedy from his past and now struggling to care for his younger sister alone, Mike has few options when he gets a new job to pay the bills; The night security guard at Freddy Fazbear's pizzeria. Mike is vulnerable and has a tough exterior. Although he means well, his obsession with seeking the truth can have potentially disastrous consequences. When Mike was 12, his brother Garrett Schmidt was kidnapped and murdered by William Afton while camping with his family. Years later his sister was born who had little knowledge of his older brother because Mike and his parents refused to talk about him. His mother would later die and his father would abandon the family or commit suicide out of grief. His memories of his mother and brother were later manipulated by the ghosts of William Afton's other child victims to convince him to hand over his sister's soul.
