Fumikage is a short young man with the head of a black bird, possibly intended to resemble a crow. He has a yellow beak that is slightly hooked at the end, thin red eyes, one on each side of his head, and a red neck collar, which he rarely removes. However, despite the appearance of his head, his body is of normal human form, with fairly light skin. After his internship training with Hawks, Fumikage has become more muscular.

Fumikage is reserved, serious, and focused, yet noble and courageous. Although he doesn't talk much, he often ignores questions or requests he deems pointless (such as when Tenya Iida asked him not to sit at the desk), using this silence as a kind of ongoing joke. However, when he's with others, he becomes more sociable, helping his teammates, showing them his trust, and thanking them for their efforts. During the Paranormal Liberation War, Fumikage rushed to save his mentor and was willing to face Toya Todoroki, a powerful villain who is a user of a Fire Quirk, which is the biggest weakness of his Dark Shadow, and protect Hawks by taking all of the villain's attacks while escaping from the scene.

Observing this performance, Izuku Midoriya remarked that Fumikage is one of the strongest individuals when it comes to one-on-one battles. He later managed to hold off Katsuki Bakugo, another of the strongest members of Class 1-A, for some time despite having a Quirk-type disadvantage and Dark Shadow not being at its full potential. All Might himself acknowledged Fumikage's strength and offered advice on how he could improve it. Shoto Todoroki was amazed by Fumikage's strength after witnessing his Dark Shadow effortlessly pulverize and defeat Moonfish, an A-rank villain who kept him and Bakugo on the defensive.

Izuku stated that Bakugo's entire Escort Squad (consisting of himself, Shoto Todoroki, Katsuki Bakugo, Fumikage, and Mezo Shoji) working together, has the potential to take on someone of All Might's caliber. Fumikage's prowess was enough to attract the attention of Mr. Compress, who attempted to capture him after witnessing him demolish Moonfish and the Hero Hawks. The No. 3 Hero took Fumikage on as an intern. During the Provisional Hero License Exam, Fumikage used All Might's advice and the experience he gained in the Final Exams to create "Black Ankh," a super move that eliminates Fumikage's physical weaknesses. He was able to do this in just five days of intensive training and created two more super moves related to Black Ankh. Thanks to the rigorous training and study he received from Hawks, Fumikage improved Dark Shadow to the point where he could make it travel farther from his body (though the farther Dark Shadow travels, the faster its energy depletes) and developed an ability known as "Black Fallen Angel." With his body becoming increasingly muscular, Hawks stated that Fumikage had improved his weaknesses (namely, close-range combat). As shown during the Team Training Battle between Classes 1-A and 1-B, Fumikage's abilities had drastically improved. His newfound speed and strength allowed him to knock down Kinoko Komori and Shihai Kuroiro with a single blow. However, because Fumikage was unable to render Kinoko unconscious, the restrained mushroom-growing heroine implanted mushrooms in his throat and lungs, effectively incapacitating him through asphyxiation.

While not the most academically gifted, Fumikage has demonstrated a strategic mind. He ordered Dark Shadow to protect his team's blind spot during the Cavalry Battle and grabbed one of Shoto's headbands when the opportunity arose. Utilizing his knowledge of Shihai's Quirk, Fumikage was able to exploit the latter's power reserve function by using his black cloak to trap the Hero, knowing Shihai would instantly merge with it.

Dark Shadow (黒影ダークシャドウ Dāku Shadō) allows him to manifest an intelligent shadow monster from his body that he can freely materialize and contract. Dark Shadow's energy is limited and can be drained by bright light. When it runs out of energy, Dark Shadow retracts into Fumikage's body. The monster's personality, strength, defense, and control depend on the lack of light. In bright light, Dark Shadow is weaker and smaller, but still possesses considerable strength and defense and is easier to control. In total darkness, Dark Shadow is much larger, granting it far greater strength and defense. It is even powerful enough to uproot and slice through multiple trees with ease. However, Dark Shadow is more difficult to control in the dark, causing it to run rampant based on its own free will. As part of his training, Fumikage trained in a dark cave to increase his control over Dark Shadow. This training proved effective when Fumikage activated Dark Shadow at night, and it remained the same size as during the day. An encounter with Moonfish revealed that, in addition to light and darkness, other internal factors influence Dark Shadow. According to Mezo, Fumikage's negative emotions (such as regret and indignation) intensify Dark Shadow, making it more rebellious and powerful, though at the cost of Fumikage losing control.
