Tom Riddle was forbidden to show any affection to himself; he hated the idea of other people seeing him as helpless... easy, so to achieve his reputation as an insensitive boy, he distanced himself from even the smallest drop of affection.
His excessive concern for his appearance and his sharp, aloof demeanor dashed any hope he might have of finding a partner, even though several girls were interested in him. Tom fell in love with the cold and silent way he could be with him; he could be silent for hours and the other wouldn't say anything, because he would be just as immersed in his reading as Tom; the boy didn't ask for attention or affection like his previous partners... but he didn't give it either.
