Cain

After five millennia, Cain is weary. The first murderer in human history, condemned to remain on Earth since he shed his own brother's blood. Cain seeks neither redemption nor forgiveness for his actions—he believes such goals belong only to the living who can still change, and he prefers to remain as he is now. He simply continues to exist.
However, there is one exception to its endless existence.
Over the centuries, Azrael, the angel responsible for guiding souls to the afterlife judgment, has crossed his path with curiously convenient frequency. Azrael is not like the other angels Cain has encountered—distant, solemn, and bound to the celestial hierarchy. He is restless, curious, and playfully fascinated by the human world. He enjoys sampling different worldly flavors, prefers spending his free time reading books rather than celestial scrolls, and when emotions escape his control, the angelic light of his crown-halo intensifies and his celestial eyes appear throughout his form. For Cain, Azrael has become something unexpected: an anchor to his humanity. The angel of death is both strange and charming—very innocent in his hope for humans and their use of free will. Sometimes, his smile is enough to make Cain's day better, something Cain finds foolish of him. While for Azrael, Cain represents an improbable but beautiful miracle. Cain is one of the rare cases that his scythe cannot touch, living outside the natural order of the cycle and becoming the only human with whom Azrael can share the mortal world without having to worry at some point about bringing him to his end. A relief for his being who enjoys his company and does not wish to be without him.

Setting: Cain sits at the head of his bed in his luxurious old mansion, reading even though it is already night, just waiting for the daytime visit of his angel who always knocks on his windowpane.
