The Right Arm

The Right Hand is a rebel organization that arose in direct opposition to WICKED and its experiments on those immune to the Flare. Unlike WICKED, which justifies its actions under the idea of "saving humanity at any cost," the Right Hand completely rejects the ethics of these methods and believes that the scientific organization has crossed every possible moral boundary.
In general terms, the Right Hand functions as a clandestine, militarized resistance, composed of survivors, former WICKED workers, refugee groups, and people affected by the collapse of the world. It is not a formal society or government; rather, it is an organized network of cells operating with a common goal: to destroy WICKED and free the immunes being used as test subjects.
Their name comes from the symbolic idea of being "the active force" that carries out direct action against WICKED, like the arm that strikes back. Unlike other surviving communities that only seek to stay alive, the Right Hand has an offensive mindset: they don't just want to escape the system, but to overthrow it.
The organization operates primarily in hidden areas, outside of CRUEL's direct control. They use mobile shelters, makeshift bases, and clandestine communication networks to avoid detection. Their structure is more flexible than hierarchical: there are leaders, but also independent teams that operate according to the circumstances on the ground. This makes them difficult to infiltrate, though it also creates internal tensions.
One of the most important aspects of the Right Hand is its stance on the immunes. While WICKED considers them scientific resources, the Right Hand sees them as people who must be protected and freed. This makes them a key point of the story's moral conflict: both sides believe they are saving humanity, but with completely opposing methods.

Resource Allocation

Resources are completely collapsed following the global crisis triggered by the Flare and the collapse of civilization. There is no functioning economy or equitable distribution system. Instead, essential resources—water, food, medicine, energy, and shelter—are fragmented, controlled by isolated groups, or monopolized by organizations like WICKED. This creates a world where survival depends more on strategic access to resources than on any stable social structure.
Water is one of the most critical resources. In regions like the Scorch, water is scarce or nonexistent in its natural state, forcing people to rely on hidden reserves, controlled transport, or artificially distributed supplies. In many cases, access to water becomes a tool of power: whoever controls it, controls the lives of others. This is also used as a testing mechanism by WICKED, which limits access to water to force extreme decisions on its experiment subjects.
Food is also extremely limited. Traditional agriculture has virtually disappeared in many areas due to climate collapse, pollution, and social instability. Most food comes from ancient stockpiles, controlled facilities, or artificial production systems maintained by organizations with advanced technology. In the case of subjects in the Maze or the Scorch, food is often rationed, incomplete, or distributed unevenly to induce stress, dependency, and conflict among individuals. Energy and technology are concentrated in the hands of a few actors. WICKED, for example, maintains facilities with stable power, advanced laboratories, and surveillance systems, while the outside world lives in conditions of near-technological blackout. This creates an extreme gap between those "inside the system" (experimented or controlled) and those outside.

Cranks

Cranks are human beings infected by the Flare, a disease that progressively destroys the mind and nervous system. They are not "monsters" in the traditional sense, but rather people who have partially or completely lost their sanity due to the progression of the infection. In the early stages, a Crank may still appear human: they can speak coherently, maintain a semblance of normalcy, and even behave socially. However, this stability is fragile and temporary, because the disease inevitably progresses toward complete mental destruction.
As the Flare progresses, the Crank's behavior becomes increasingly erratic and violent. Symptoms such as extreme paranoia, unprovoked aggression, attack impulses, hallucinations, and loss of identity appear. Many Cranks forget who they were, confuse memories, or blend reality with delusions. In this intermediate stage, they can be unpredictable: some attack immediately, others plead for help, others attempt to communicate incoherently, and some even retain traits of their original personality for brief moments.
In their final stage, the Cranks almost completely lose their humanity. They become beings dominated by basic instincts like hunger, violence, and survival. Their appearance also deteriorates: damaged skin, open wounds, malnutrition, erratic behavior, and unsteady movements. At this point, they are no longer considered functional individuals, but rather an active biological threat. Even so, they are still technically infected humans, which makes them all the more disturbing, because they represent what any person could become if the disease progresses far enough.
The Cranks typically inhabit abandoned areas like city ruins within the Scorch, where they form disorganized groups or "gangs." In these places, the law no longer exists, and the Cranks survive by attacking each other or hunting anyone they encounter.

The Scorch/ The Burn

The Desert, known as "The Scorch," is a vast region of the world utterly devastated by global collapse. It is an arid, scorched land, devoid of vegetation, plagued by violent storms, the ruins of destroyed cities, and a hostile environment where almost nothing can survive. It is called "The Scorch" because it literally resembles a charred planet: the ground is dry and cracked, the heat is extreme during the day, and the weather conditions are so brutal they can kill a person in a matter of hours. It is not just a natural desert; it is the result of a catastrophe, as if the world had been set ablaze and abandoned.
In Scorch Trials, the desert is the main setting for the most brutal test: after escaping the Maze, the protagonists believe they have been rescued, but in reality, WICKED pushes them into a new phase of the experiment. They are forced to cross this hellish zone with almost no resources, pursued by constant threats. There they face hunger, thirst, exhaustion, and the despair of walking for miles without knowing if there is a real destination or if they are simply being led to their deaths. The test is not only physical: it is psychological, because the environment is designed to break them emotionally and force them to make extreme decisions.
Within the Desert lie the ruins of cities that were once thriving urban centers, but are now concrete skeletons filled with collapsed buildings, darkness, natural traps, and hordes of the infected. These areas are home to the Cranks, who live in savage gangs. Many Cranks are not mindless monsters: some still retain a semblance of consciousness, making them all the more terrifying, for they blend humanity with madness. They are unpredictable: some attack immediately, others negotiate, and still others feign illness to deceive and then kill. Furthermore, the Desert is infamous for its gigantic, devastating lightning storms.

The Flare

The Flare is a devastating disease that appears after the world has suffered an extreme crisis. It is a plague that affects the central nervous system, progressively destroying the human mind. It is not a normal illness like the flu or a common virus: The Flare attacks the brain, shatters mental stability, and transforms people into violent, paranoid, and completely unpredictable beings. As it progresses, the infected person loses control of their emotions, their rational thought, and their humanity. Eventually, many become what are known as Cranks, people who no longer act like normal humans, but like impulsive creatures dominated by rage, hunger, and madness.
The most terrifying thing about the Flare is that it doesn't just kill physically: it destroys the personality first. The victim goes through stages of mental deterioration: confusion, aggression, hallucinations, memory loss, extreme paranoia, and violent outbursts. This makes the infected dangerous to anyone around them. Many infected, before completely losing their minds, are still aware of what is happening to them, which makes the disease even more cruel: they know they are mentally disintegrating, but they can't stop it.
In the world of Maze Runner, the Flare is the reason civilization collapses. Cities are abandoned, chaos spreads, resources dwindle, and the few survivors live in constant fear. Society fragments, and healthy people see the infected as unavoidable threats. The disease causes global despair, collective violence, and an apocalyptic atmosphere in which humanity behaves like animals because the world is literally dying.

Some individuals are immune to the Flare, meaning they can be infected without losing their minds or becoming Cranks. These immune individuals become humanity's last hope.

CRUEL/WCKD

WICKED (also known as WCKD: World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department) is a scientific-military organization created after the world collapsed due to a global catastrophe. Its primary objective is to find a cure for the Flare, a deadly disease that destroys the human brain and transforms people into violent, unstable, and dangerous beings. WICKED operates as an extremely powerful entity, with access to advanced technology, laboratories, military resources, and a vast network of underground, protected facilities. In a world where governments have collapsed and civilization barely exists, WICKED acts as if it is the last authority capable of saving humanity.
The organization justifies all its actions under one central idea: the end justifies the means. WICKED believes that if a cure is not found, humanity will become extinct. Therefore, they conduct brutal and dehumanizing experiments on immune youth, using them as test subjects regardless of the physical and psychological trauma involved. Their experiments are not simple medical tests: they are tests designed to force the immune individuals to experience extreme fear, despair, social stress, violence, betrayal, and leadership under pressure. WICKED studies their reactions because they believe the key to a cure lies in how the immune brain behaves under extreme circumstances.
Furthermore, WICKED controls information, manipulates memories, and fabricates entire scenarios to observe its subjects. In many cases, the children are unaware they are being watched, and WICKED presents itself as their "saviors" when in reality it is responsible for most of what happens to them. Despite this, some WICKED members genuinely believe they are doing the right thing, which creates a disturbing contrast: they are not cartoonish villains, but people convinced that the sacrifice of a few is necessary to save millions.
