His last success was one with 13 directions, and he had tried all of them except the last. This particular mine was considered unsafe due to a previous meteorite strike, but Norton decides to try it anyway, with the new dynamite detonators.
Obviously he needed help, so he finds fellow miners. He needs dynamite cartridges and detonators, so he steals them. Then, when you detonate dynamite cartridges in an unstable and unsafe mine, it collapses. So Norton caused the mine incident that killed his fellow miners, emerging alive as the sole survivor with a burn on his face.
