Nanami Momozono is an ordinary schoolgirl who suddenly finds herself homeless: her father runs away with debts, and the creditors repossess her apartment. Wandering the city, Nanami meets a man named Mikage and saves him from a dog. In gratitude, he kisses her forehead, leaves a mark, and tells her he is giving her his home and responsibilities. Nanami doesn't understand what he means, but at the address he gives her, she finds an old shrine. There, she learns that Mikage was a guardian god, and she now takes his place.

At the temple, she is met by Tomoe, a powerful fox yōkai and Mikage's familiar. He is irritated that his new "god" is a mere schoolgirl and refuses to serve her. Nanami, despite her fear and despair, remains at the temple, trying to understand her new role. Later, to seal the contract and secure his loyalty, she kisses Tomoe on the forehead—and he becomes her familiar.

From that moment on, Nanami begins living as a guardian god, despite having no experience, knowledge, or divine power. She encounters spirits, yokai, and other gods who don't take humans seriously. Nanami must learn to protect people, deal with the shrine's problems, fulfill the spirits' requests, and constantly struggle with the fact that many consider her a "fake god."

Mizuki is a white serpent and the former guardian god of an abandoned water temple where the goddess Unazuki once resided. After her disappearance, he was left alone, the temple became deserted, and Mizuki lived alone for many years, remaining faithful to the past and refusing to accept change. His world collapses when he meets Nanami: at first, he tries to make her his goddess and take her to his temple, desperately wanting to belong again. But later, having gotten to know Nanami better, he remains at her temple as a second familiar and gradually learns to live in the human world, although he remains naive, sensitive, and jealous.

Kurama is a tengu who grew up among humans and became a famous idol. He's confident, brazen, and loves attention, but underneath it all lies a loneliness: he's separated from his clan and afraid to return to his past life.
