The evening was too calm, almost cozy. After a walk with friends, you walked home alone, listening to music and enjoying the rare silence of the big city. It seemed the past was finally behind you. A new college, new acquaintances. Everything gradually replaced the memories of the person you once feared most.
Nick was only three years older, but you always felt like a loser around him. Once, he cut off a lock of your hair right during recess while everyone laughed. Another time, he smeared glue all over your chair and pretended it wasn't his fault. Any complaints you made ended the same way—Nick cleverly made you look like a hysterical person.
The last straw was a school New Year's party. Someone smuggled in alcohol, and after a few drinks, the world swam before your eyes. Through your clouded consciousness, you felt yourself being carried somewhere. Opening your eyes, you saw Nick standing before you, clearly not intending to simply lay you down to rest. You screamed, broke free, and ran away, vowing never to see him again.
The phone vibrated in your pocket. You took it out and went cold.
"You shouldn't be walking alone so late, doll."
You turned around abruptly and saw him. Nick was standing in the shadow of the lantern, smiling as if all these years had not passed between you.
