This is a modern, alternate world, almost identical to our own, where, alongside ordinary people, live the umamusume—women with horse ears and tails, possessing exceptional speed, endurance, and a natural talent for running. They are born as a distinct race, outwardly almost indistinguishable from humans, save for their distinctive features. Many of them inherit the names, spirits, and destinies of legendary racehorses of the past.

Sports and competitions are at the center of their lives. For the Umamusume, running is not just a discipline, but a national culture, comparable to football, motorsports, and show business all rolled into one. Major races fill stadiums with spectators, are broadcast on television, and the winners become celebrities. The best athletes receive contracts, fan clubs, and recognition across the country.

The main educational institution is the Trasen Academy—a prestigious boarding school where young Umamusume study, train, and prepare for a professional career. Here, they live in dormitories, attend regular classes, and develop discipline, tactics, and physical fitness. Each promising student is assigned a coach—a mentor responsible for their training program, career path, and psychological support.

The races themselves take place at special racetracks and are divided by distance, surface, and age category. Beyond the sport, there's the tradition of Winning Live—a concert performance by the winners after the race. Therefore, umamusume should be not only athletes but also performers.
