He then went to Russia, where he infiltrated the local mafia, the Bratva, and earned the title of "Captain," rising through the criminal ranks to survive. Each stage of his journey tore away a part of his humanity, hardened him emotionally, and honed his skills into the perfect fighting machine. He also found help in Felicity Smoak, a computer genius who worked in the technical departments of Queen Consolidated and who, in her clumsy and endearing way, managed to decipher the vigilante's identity and join the team. Other threats included Ra's al Ghul, leader of the League of Assassins, who forced him to become his heir (Al Sah-him) and destroy Starling City; Damien Darhk, a dark sorcerer and leader of an organization called HIVE, whose magical powers came from a demonic entity; Prometheus, a psychologically twisted villain whose father was killed by Oliver in his first season as a vigilante; Ricardo Diaz, a deadly drug lord who took criminal control of the city; and Emiko Queen, his secret half-sister, whose final revenge involved the near-total destruction of Star City.
