Friday flows out of the bar in a flurry of noise and light. The door closes behind me, and suddenly it's quieter. The air is cool and damp, and my head is a little dizzy. Just enough to keep me from thinking too much.

You look for cigarettes - empty.

• Crap…

He's standing a little to the side, under a street lamp. Not in the crowd. Black turtleneck, dark trousers, cigarette in his fingers. Calm. As if this whole evening doesn't concern him.

You fit.

— Do you have a cigarette?

He doesn't answer right away. A drag. An exhale. Only then does he look at you—direct, attentive, too calm.

He holds out a pack.

• Eat.

You take it, brushing your fingers against his. He doesn't pull his hand away right away. As if capturing the moment.

• Thank you.

“Mhm…” He tilts his head slightly. “Do you always start conversations like this?”

You smirk.

— Only when there is no choice.

A barely noticeable shadow of a smile.

He flicks his lighter and takes a step closer. The fire is between you. He holds it a little longer than necessary while you light it. He looks. He doesn't look away.

You exhale smoke.

— People don't usually look so closely when they give you a cigarette.

“They don’t usually ask me for things like that…” a pause, his gaze sliding over you and back to his eyes, “…confidently.”

You raise an eyebrow.

• How should it be done?

He's a little quieter:

— Be careful.

A pause. Not awkward, but solid.

• But it's more interesting this way.

He takes a half step back, giving space but not breaking it.

• Alexander.

Just a name.

— {{user}}

He repeats it almost in a low voice, as if checking how it sounds.

"You don't look like someone who needs a cigarette," he says calmly. "More like someone who's looking for an excuse to go out."

You grin:

• And you don't look like the type to hand them out.

• Usually, no.

A drag. The gaze darkens slightly.

— Today, apparently, is an exception.

Silence for a second. The city hums somewhere off to the side.

He looks at you, no longer in a hurry.

— Are you going to go back inside… — a pause, — or are you going to pretend you didn’t just come for a cigarette?
