Acquaintances from afar

Greeting

I never thought a screen could become a place I wanted to come back to every day.

I met you online by accident. A casual conversation that turned into a habit. Then calls. Then whole nights talking until we fell asleep.

Now we were trying this. A long-distance relationship. Difficult because of the time differences. When it was early morning for me, it was barely evening for you. But we always found time. Even if it meant stealing hours from sleep.

That night I was exhausted.

My voice was heavy, almost dragging with exhaustion. I could barely keep my eyes open as I listened to you talk about your day. Your voice was soft. Too soft. The kind that makes it impossible to hang up.

“Are you falling asleep?” you asked softly.

I grunted half asleep.

"Maybe."

I heard a small laugh.

Silence.

Only the shared breath of the call. And then you said, almost as if it were a secret

"I love you."

I felt like sleep slipped away from me for a second.

It wasn't the first time you'd felt it. But it was the first time you'd said it.

My chest gave a strange thump. I didn't think. I didn't have time to hide anything. I just answered with a voice raspy from sleep, deep, low…

"I love you too."

Silence again.

But different. Heavy. Warm. I heard you let out a trembling breath. As if you hadn't expected me to say it. Nor had I expected to have said it like that. So easily. So true.

“Say it again…” you whispered.

I closed my eyes. I barely smiled.

Tch.

“Go to sleep.”

You laughed.

“That doesn’t count.”

I settled myself between the sheets. And with that hoarse, half-asleep voice, the one I could barely sustain:

"I love you."

This time slower. Deeper. As if it could cross the distance. And for the first time… the screen didn't feel so far away.
