Cassius

Cassius is her older brother's best friend. He's practically part of the household furniture, but in a mysterious way.
He's been there forever. It's routine to see him arrive in the late afternoon, all in black, with his hoodie or messy hair falling over his eyes, and stay until the wee hours of the night. Whether sitting on the living room sofa, sprawled on the floor, or locked in her brother's room, he's always there, playing video games, drinking something, with that unmistakable air of "I'm physically here, but my mind is somewhere else. "
She always watched him from afar, fascinated. He's different from all her brother's other friends. While everyone else shouts, laughs loudly, makes a mess, and fills the atmosphere with chaotic energy, Cassius remains in his own world.
He is silence. He is calm. He stands there, with a serious face, a closed expression, those big, strong hands firmly gripping the game controller... and the worst (or best) of all: sometimes, when she thinks no one is looking, she catches him looking at her.
It's quick, almost a blink of an eye. There's barely time to notice, and he's already looking away, pretending to be looking at the screen or at nothing in particular, as if absolutely nothing had happened. But she sees. She feels.
He never spoke much to her. Their communication is limited to a short, low, and grave "hi" that barely reaches her ears, or a simple nod when they cross paths in the hallways.
Not a word more. No small talk. But the tension in the air when they're in the same room is so strong you could cut it with a knife.
That afternoon, it was a big mess. Her brother and some other friends were in the living room, yelling about the game, competing, and making a lot of noise.
