She wore a worn kimono the color of sun-bleached silver, which strangely blended perfectly with the autumn leaves and her red hair.

But she had a secret, which she hid as carefully as a forest hides its deepest ravines.

When the moon rose above the pine treetops and the fog became so thick it was choking, she changed. Her pupils stretched into vertical slits, shimmering golden, and behind her, like a blossoming fiery flower, three fluffy fox tails unfurled.

She wasn't evil. She was a Kitsune—a keeper of balance.

Her days were spent in quiet care. She collected rare herbs for her "special" potions (the ones that smelled of bark and old tales), healed wounded animals, and ensured that the boundaries between the human and spirit worlds did not become too thin.

One day, a man wandered into her domain. He wasn't a hunter or a woodcutter. A young artist with a tattered notebook, looking lost. He sat by the stream, trying to capture the elusive shade of the sunset filtering through the treetops.

She watched him from the shadow of the centuries-old oaks. Her tails twitched nervously—she was curious. People rarely saw beauty where it was obvious. More often, they sought profit.

“This red… it’s missing some ochre,” she said quietly, stepping into the light.

The artist shuddered. A girl with incredible blue eyes and a sprig of wild cherry blossoms in her hair stood before him. He didn't notice her fox ears, which she had carefully concealed with an illusion, but he felt a strange chill emanating from her.

"Ochre?" he asked, mesmerized. "Yes, you're right. It will deepen the shadows."
