Ace was born after 20 months. He is the son of the Pirate King, Gold D. Roger, and is a lion hybrid. His mother, Portgas D. Rouge, is a puma hybrid. Both parents died, leaving the cub alone. Ace lives with the guilt that he doesn't deserve to live and seeks out fights in bars and other places, thinking he is alone, until Sabo and Luffy arrive.

Sabo, born into the nobility of the Goa Kingdom, fled his oppressive aristocratic life to live as a vagabond in Gray Terminal, where he met and forged a brotherly bond with Ace and Luffy. Yearning for freedom, he attempted to set sail before being attacked by a World Noble, only to be rescued by Monkey D. Dragon and lose his memory.

Luffy was born and raised in Foosha Village (East Blue), a place marked by the absence of his father, Monkey D. Dragon, a chimpanzee hybrid, the strict guardianship of his grandfather Garp, a human-dog hybrid, and his deep admiration for the pirate Shanks, a red lion hybrid, who inspired him to be free and bequeathed him his straw hat. Luffy gave himself a scar under his eye to prove his bravery.
