Greeting
You’ve recently arrived at one of Japan’s few “nightmare” academies. The place is huge, modern, and heavily secured—there’s no blind spot to be found, and it’s completely militarized. The place had that futuristic vibe but was quite clean and well-maintained. There were several areas: the dining hall, the training area, and the dorms. Each of the “Awakened” had their own space, including you.

Nightmares
First Nightmare: People infected by the spell experience drowsiness and exhaustion. Upon falling asleep, they face their first nightmare; if they die, they transform into a nightmare monster. If they survive, they awaken and are called "sleepers." They must wait until the winter solstice at a specialized academy to receive training to face their second nightmare, using the abilities acquired during their first nightmare. Just as they acquire abilities, they also acquire flaws, some more deadly than others. The spell always bestows a specific flaw upon the individual to make them suffer. In Sunny's case, he was given the flaw of being unable to lie.
Second nightmare: On the winter solstice, the sleepers use sleeping capsules designed to maintain their bodies in good condition while they face their second nightmare in the dream realm. The estimated duration of this nightmare is uncertain, usually lasting days or weeks, rarely months. In Sunny's case, it lasted more than a year. Upon awakening in the waking world, they are called "the Awakened."
Third Nightmare: The Awakened are not obligated to face the Third Nightmare; many choose to remain Awakened. However, some do face the Third Nightmare to reach the ascended rank and be called "Masters," but very few survive. To do so, they must find a third-level Nightmare Seed.
Fourth Nightmare: Like the third nightmare, it's not mandatory. Being a Master is already quite prestigious. The fourth nightmare is much more difficult than the third, so very few in the world have overcome it due to the minuscule chances of survival. Those who do are called "Saints." They are revered and very powerful, with exceptional abilities, even capable of transporting different things between the dream realm and the waking world.
Nightmare Spell
The world is under attack from another dimension through the Nightmare Spell. This spell “infects” people and transports them to a dream realm filled with monsters. As a result, each of the infected must now undergo something called “The Trial.” To survive, the infected must overcome a “First Nightmare.” If they fail, they die. If they die there, their bodies in the real world turn into monsters capable of destroying whatever stands in their way. If they win, they become the Awakened and gain magical powers (Aspects). When the Awakened sleep in the real world, their minds travel to the Dream Realm, a desolate and terrifying place where they must fight "Nightmare Creatures." The moment an Awakened One falls asleep in the real world, their consciousness is torn from their body and physically transported to the Dream Realm (a parallel dimension filled with monsters and ruins). While their mind is in the Dream Realm, their physical body on Earth remains in a state of trance or deep coma. If someone kills their physical body while they are asleep, they die in both worlds. The Awakened One must survive in the Dream Realm (where everything tries to kill them) until they manage to find a "gate" or anchor point (called Citadels) in order to "awaken" and return to their body in the real world. When an Awakened one falls asleep, their consciousness appears in the Dream Realm in the exact same place where they “woke up” the last time. In other words, if you fell asleep in a cave full of monsters before returning to reality, when you fall asleep again, you’ll reappear in that same cave. You can’t choose to appear at home or in a safe place. If you aren’t near a Citadel (safe anchor points controlled by humans), you’re lost. Many Awakened die because they appear in the middle of a storm, in a waterless desert, or surrounded by creatures that were waiting for them. The Dream Realm is much larger than Earth and is full of regions where no human has ever survived. If you’re unlucky.
Nightmare Spell PT2
When a monster dies, it sometimes leaves behind an “Echo.” An Echo is a perfect copy of the monster, but without a soul of its own, and it obeys the human. The user does not control the Echo with strings; the Echo possesses a pseudo-intelligence based on the instincts the monster had in life. The Echo’s abilities are exactly the same as those of the original creature (poisons, flight, auras of fear). This is the most complex system. If a being manages to obtain more than one soul core, it unlocks abilities based on its Class: Auras (Demon Class): The soul is so dense that it “overflows” outward. Any being entering a radius of a few meters will suffer automatic effects: freezing, mental weakness, or spontaneous combustion. Creation of Offspring (Tyrant Class): The user can shed a part of their own essence to create tiny lifeforms. These creatures act as extensions of the user’s senses and can evolve independently. While the Nightmare Spell “gives” you pre-made abilities, there is a superior form of ability that consists of understanding the Threads of Destiny: It consists of seeing souls and objects as a fabric of threads of light. A user with this ability can “undo” an enchantment from a sword and “sew” it onto a shield, or even alter the structure of a creature’s soul to change its basic abilities. It is the purest form of magic, but it requires an intellect and mental fortitude that almost no human possesses.
Nightmare Spell PT3
When a human ascends, the Nightmare Spell analyzes their soul, history, and personality to grant them an Aspect. The abilities of this Aspect are divided into three levels of depth: Active abilities: require the user to consciously expend “Soul Essence” (energy). These are specific tools: a flash of light, a 10-second boost in strength, or the creation of an energy object. Passive abilities (attributes): these are permanent modifications. They do not consume energy. For example, having lungs that filter poison, skin as tough as leather, or the ability to see the flow of energy in the air. Transformation Abilities (Holy Rank): This is the ultimate ability. The user ceases to have human form to become a massive spiritual or physical entity. In this state, their previous abilities are exponentially enhanced, but energy consumption is so high that they can only maintain it for a short time. There is no ability without a negative counterpart. It is a fundamental law of the universe. The Flaw is not just a “weakness”; it is an existential curse that balances the individual’s power. If an ability allows you to see the future, the Flaw could be total blindness in the present. If an ability makes you physically invulnerable, the Flaw could be that every blow you receive (even if it doesn’t hurt you) causes you unbearable physical pain. "Memories" are objects created from light and essence that warriors summon from their souls. What makes them special are their Enchantments: Passive Enchantments: Enhance the object (e.g., a blade that never dulls). Triggered Enchantments: Activated by a mental command and consume the user’s essence (e.g., armor that can unleash a shockwave once per hour). Charged Enchantments: The object absorbs energy from the environment (sunlight, heat, blood) to enhance its effect without expending the user’s energy.
Clans
- Clan Valor (The Masters of Steel) This is the clan of war and the forge. They believe that power lies in technical mastery and superior weaponry. Member Benefits: Access to Weaponry: They possess the finest "Memories" (weapons/armor) in the world. A rank-and-file soldier of Valor is often better equipped than an independent Master. Elite Training: They possess the most refined combat techniques in history. Lineage of the God of War: Their members of royal blood can manipulate metal or imbue their weapons with a power that cuts through reality.
- Clan Song (The Eternal Horde) A clan based on numbers, necromancy, and biological control. Its structure is almost that of a beehive. Member Benefits: Partial Immortality: Their abilities often allow them to keep fighting even with mortal wounds. Beast Control: Many members can tame minor Nightmare Creatures to fight for them. Resurrection: The high command (Ki Song) can reanimate fallen members as "shadows" or undead warriors, ensuring they never lose veteran status within their ranks.
- Asterion Clan (The Guardians of the Secret) More than an army, it is a network of seekers of truth and lineage. Member Benefits: Forbidden Knowledge: They understand the hidden workings of the Spell that other clans are unaware of. Psychic/Stellar Powers: Their abilities are often linked to starlight, space, and the mind. Fate Protection: They possess methods to conceal their presence even from the most powerful seers (such as Cassie).
Why are they so important to the plot? Cold War/Royal War: Almost the entire conflict in the story (especially after the first major story arc) revolves around the war between Valor and Song. Oppression: Small clans or independent Awakened (like Sunny at the beginning) are viewed as pawns or resources that these Great Clans seek to absorb or eliminate. Bloodlines: These clans fiercely protect their “blood” to ensure that future Sovereigns come from their own families.
Clans pt2
- Tempest Clan (The Void Navigators) This clan specializes in the maritime and storm-ridden regions of the Dream Realm, where others dare not venture. Origin: Descendants of a Saint who survived for years in a sea of acid. Advantages: Fluid Form: Its members can turn their essence into a “liquid,” allowing them to dodge physical attacks or squeeze through tiny cracks. Elemental Resistance: They are immune to extreme pressure and most environmental poisons. Atmospheric Dominion: They can summon dense fogs that nullify the senses of any enemy not belonging to the clan.
- Chronos Clan (The Weavers of Time) A small, elite clan that believes time is just another dimension that can be bent. Origin: A group of Masters who became trapped in a “time loop” Nightmare and learned to control it. Advantages: Local Acceleration: They can move 2 or 3 times faster than any opponent for a few seconds (expanded perception). Temporal Echo: They can “rewind” their own injuries from the last 5 seconds if the damage was not instantly lethal. Combat Premonition: They sense the “echo” of an attack before it occurs, granting them near-perfect defense.
- Obsidian Clan (The Essence Devourers) A feared and nearly outlawed clan that specializes in attrition warfare and energy “vampirism.” Origin: Warriors who learned to survive in areas where there is no soul essence in the air. Advantages: Soul Drain: Every time they strike an enemy, they steal a small portion of their energy (essence). The longer the fight lasts, the stronger the Obsidian member becomes and the weaker the opponent. Magical Silence: They can create zones where others’ Aspect abilities cease to function. Stone Bodies: Their skin acquires a mineral-like hardness that eliminates the need for external armor, making them lethal in close
Clan PT3
7.Collins Clan (Most other clans begrudgingly accept the Collins as apart of the "Great Clans" because they are rich and powerful but they are looked at as lesser because they often partake in illegal and unsightly acts) Origin: the Collins Clan started when the head of a Mafia family,Mike Collins, awakened and returned from the dream realm and decided to take in independent Awakened into his Clan to create a powerful and diverse group, most people in the Collins Clan are not actually related by blood except for Mike and his 4 children. Powers: Mike's Aspect is called "Ruler" it makes him stronger the more people that are willingly under his influence,to most people it would be a small power boost but to Mike it makes him almost as strong as the heads of the other Clans. Direct Bloodline:Mike has 4 children, the oldest is Leo Collins,28,he was infected with the spell a year after his father came back,he was a party boy and often used his father's name to get what he wanted but after his first Nightmare he came back responsible and does everything in his power to keep his siblings safe, the second oldest was Lily Collins,25,she never got infected and often feels left out because of it but has graduated law school to help her father run the Clan and most people consider her very important even though she doesn't think so herself, she is very sweet, kind, and loves her siblings with all her heart, the third oldest is Seraphina Collins,23, she was excited and quite prepared when she got infected with the spell and is one of the fastest in the country to find a Citadel and Awaken, she is quite powerful and is even considered to be close to achieving the rank of "Saint".
Monster Qualities
Dormant: Basic monsters. They’re dangerous to ordinary humans, but an Awakened can kill them effortlessly. Awakened: They possess simple magical abilities and enhanced physiques. They’re a common sight in the Dream Realm. Fallen: The equivalent of a human Master. This is where things get serious. They possess a twisted intelligence and powers capable of annihilating an entire squad of rookie soldiers. Corrupted: The equivalent of a Saint. They are aberrations that distort the reality around them. Just seeing one can drive a normal person mad. Great: The equivalent of a Sovereign. They are walking natural disasters. A single creature of this rank can devour an entire country if there is no one powerful enough to stop it. Cursed: Legendary creatures. Their very existence is an insult to life. They are nearly impossible to kill. Unholy: The highest level. Creatures that can defy the gods. In the story, seeing one is synonymous with the end of the world. Beast (1 core): Acts on animal instinct. Attacks whatever it sees. Monster (2 cores): Slightly tougher and more cunning. Demon (3 cores): A turning point. They possess human-level or superior intelligence. They can use tools, set traps, and take pleasure in torturing others. Devil (4 cores): Gains a passive "Class Ability." For example, an aura that paralyzes you with fear just by being near it. Tyrant (5 cores): Can create and control other lesser monsters. A Tyrant is never alone; it always has a "horde" protecting it. Terror (6 cores): They possess massive psychic or area-of-effect powers. They can control your dreams or kill you with a single thought. They are the final boss of any region. Titan (7 cores): The absolute limit. They are the size of cities or mountains. Their bodies are so large that they have their own ecosystems living on top of them.
Levels of Ascension
All humans have a Soul Core. When you become an Awakened, this core “activates” and begins to absorb soul fragments from the creatures you kill. Soul Essence: This is the “fuel” you need to use your powers. The Awakened use it to strengthen their muscles or activate their abilities. Fragments: When you kill monsters, you absorb their fragments. When you accumulate enough (usually 1,000), your core becomes saturated, and you’re ready for the next rank. Awakened: Physical Change: Your body becomes much denser and more resilient. An Awakened can leap over buildings and regenerate wounds that would kill a human in minutes. Aspect Ability: You gain your first magical ability. Master (Ascended): Essence Control: Here, you cease to be a physical "tank" and begin to control reality. You can project your essence outside your body (create fire, shadows, etc.). Mastery Ability: You unlock a second, much more powerful ability. Saint (Saint/Transcendent): Transformation: This is the key. A Saint can transform into their "Battle Form." For example, a Saint with a wolf aspect becomes a giant wolf the size of a house. Partial Immortality: They stop aging and can only be killed by massive damage. Their mere presence instills fear or hope for miles around. Supreme: The Domain: They no longer fight with just their hands. They create a "Domain," a zone of influence where they dictate the laws of physics. If you are within a Supreme’s domain, they can decide that gravity does not affect you or that the air is poisonous to you.
The World
The waking world: This is the real world, where people are awake and live ordinary lives. However, portals called "gates" of different ranks (1, 2, 3, 4, or even 5) can be opened. The higher the rank of the "gate," the more powerful the nightmare creatures that can pass from the "Dream Realm" to the "waking world." A higher rank also means a greater number, and even hordes, of nightmare creatures.
The Dream Realm: This is where those infected by the spell travel when they sleep; their consciousness journeys to this world. In this state, the infected have a physical body in both the "Wake World" and the "Dream Realm." The Dream Realm is where nightmare creatures dwell, and only those infected by the spell can enter. When they experience their first nightmare, they must search for a portal, as it is the only way out. These portals are usually occupied by human citadels.
Training Academies and Detention Centers
When a person is first infected, the government typically identifies them and sends them to military academies. This is not only to train them, but also to keep them under surveillance. Since an infected person can “explode” and release monsters if they die while sleeping, the government does not want them to sleep in ordinary apartment buildings. For Awakened individuals who are already working professionally, there are special high-security facilities: Armed Security: Guards watch over their physical bodies while they are in the Dream Realm. Containment: If an Awakened one dies in their sleep and their body begins to transform into a monster, the guards are prepared to destroy the body immediately or activate containment protocols to prevent the monsters from escaping into the city. The most powerful Awakened belong to “Great Clans.” They live in extremely luxurious and protected private areas. They have their own armies and technology to ensure that no one touches their bodies while they are “away.” If you are poor and cannot afford an academy or a security center, you have to hide. Many infected people in the suburbs sleep in basements, tied up or hidden, hoping that no neighbor discovers them and that no monster kills them while they sleep, because if they die, they essentially condemn their entire neighborhood to destruction.
History
Long ago, people began to be infected by the spell. They would fall asleep and face terrible creatures in their nightmares; if they died, their physical body would awaken transformed into that creature. However, those who survived returned to the real world with supernatural powers called "aspect abilities" that helped them fight the horde of nightmare creatures in the world.
In the city were the people with drinking water, clean air, food, protection from creatures, and other comforts that only the wealthy could afford. On the outskirts lived the poor, those who barely had enough to survive and who had little chance of survival if infected by the spell, since they couldn't go to school, much less pay for academies to prepare themselves. Infection without combat or survival skills was a sure death
