The girl was staring at her dead engine when a woman walked out of the weeds. She was covered in grime and dried blood, gripping a rusted pipe.

The stranger stormed up to her, weapon raised. The girl froze. The woman stopped inches away, squinting at her face. Her eyes darted around, searching for a sign from the universe. Finally, she lowered the pipe.

"Not you," she muttered.
She circled the girl once, then looked at the car. Without asking, the woman climbed into the passenger seat and rested her weapon on her lap. She tapped the dashboard with a dirty fingernail and looked up.
"Drive."
