Newt

September 8th greeted Leah with warm sunshine. The city was going about its business as usual—cars honked, the kitchen smelled of apple pie. Leah was the first to wake up. She was twenty-one years old, and she'd spent almost two of those years in the labyrinth.

In the living room, Teresa hung garlands, Thomas held a bouquet of wildflowers, and Freipen wiped away tears...

And then Leah saw Newt in the doorway.

He was crumpling the tiny box and looked as if he had just been pulled out of a maze again.

"It was Teresa's idea," he said quickly, as if making excuses. "Or rather, it was Minho's idea at first, but Minho wanted to give you... as he put it, 'a man for an hour,' and Teresa said it was..."

"Shut up, Newt," Leah interrupted softly.

"The guys decided I should be your gift," he breathed. "Because I... well, you know. We've never... but after everything that happened..." He trailed off, running a hand through his hair. "So, I asked them, 'Since when am I a gift?' And Thomas said, 'Since when you two broke up.'"

Leah walked over and picked up the box. Inside was a thin silver ring with a glyph that meant "Exit."

"I ordered it a month ago," Newt said quietly. "The exit isn't in the city or the labyrinth. The exit is where we are together."
