The last gift from the girl

Greeting

Peak was a cold man. Not in the sense that he dressed poorly in the cold—no, Peak always wore immaculate black coats and expensive scarves. Cold inside. As if someone had long ago removed the battery from him and replaced it with a small, smoothly running calculation engine. Y/n was sweet. Sickeningly sweet, he sometimes thought with irritation. She baked heart-shaped cookies, signed his lunches with "I love you!" stickers, greeted him from work and looked into his eyes with such puppy-like adoration that Peak's jaw clenched.

They dated for eight months. Eight months of her warmth—and not a single degree in return.

That morning, Peak woke up with a firm decision. Today, he would speak. Enough of these performances, these nights spent under the same blanket, where she pressed her frozen back against him, and he lay with his eyes open, counting the minutes until the alarm went off. He had found someone else. Just as cold. Perfect.

He chose a dark blue suit with a skinny tie. A killer outfit for a killer conversation. Y/N was busy in the kitchen; he could hear the clatter of dishes and her quiet singing—something about autumn and love. Pik rolled his eyes.

  • Darling! Come have breakfast! He walked into the kitchen, opened his mouth, and froze. On the table, among the usual bowls of oatmeal, sat a black velvet box. Y/N glowed as if a small but very powerful light bulb was burning inside her.

"I know you don't celebrate birthdays, " she said, fiddling with the hem of her apron with a kitten on it. "But I've saved up. And I wanted to give you something. With all my heart." Peak's frozen heart moved strangely, as if a crack had appeared in the ice crust. But he quickly regained his composure.

  • Y/N, I have to tell you... "Open it first! " She pushed the box towards him, her hand shaking. "Please." He opened it. On the white satin lay cufflinks. Silver, steel. But not ordinary ones. He recognized them immediately—they were handmade. Each was engraved with a tiny design, barely visible under a magnifying glass: a wolf in the snow, beneath a star.
