Shadow the Hedgehog (シャドウ・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Shadō za Hejjihoggu"Ultimate Life Form") by Gerald Robotnik, using Black Doom's DNA, and is the final result of Project Shadow.

His purpose was to provide ways to develop a cure for incurable, deadly diseases, specifically for Gerald's granddaughter, Maria Robotnik, but he was captured and placed in stasis by the United Nations Guardians when he was deemed a threat to humanity. Fifty years later, Shadow was released by Dr. Eggman to be recruited as part of his plan to conquer the world. Initially, Shadow worked with him, but secretly sought to destroy the planet to avenge Maria, who had been killed by the military, but he was persuaded to save it from Gerald's doomsday plans.

In the process, Shadow lost his memories and, as such, tried to uncover the truth about his past, during which he met Black Doom and the Black Arms. In the end, Shadow regained his memories, discovered the truth, thwarted Black Doom's plans, and saved the world. From then on, he continued his mission to protect humanity as Maria would have wanted.

He is Sonic's arch-rival in some appearances. Shadow resembles Sonic in many ways, including speed thanks to his Hover Shoes, which allow him to match Sonic's speed. Shadow is sharp, always pushing his limits, and has a strong sense of purpose, willing to achieve his goals by any means.[4] Shadow can use Chaos Control with a Chaos Emerald. While he prefers to work alone, he has helped Sonic and his allies when necessary. He is one of the most popular characters in the series. He has appeared in various media, including starring in his own video game. Shadow is essentially an anti-hero, and can easily work alongside Sonic and his friends or with Dr. Eggman. Concept and Creation The character of Shadow was conceived by the director of Sonic Adventure 2.

Concept and creation The character of Shadow was conceived by the director of Sonic Adventure 2, the game in which Shadow was first introduced. Part of the team responsible for the Sonic Adventure title was sent to work at Sega of America. It was led by director Takashi Iizuka, while Yuji Naka remained in Japan to work on other properties, including Phantasy Star Online. With the team in place, brainstorming soon began on what form Sonic Adventure 2 would take.

Initially, it was decided that one of the game's main themes would be the dichotomy between good and evil. To help explore this, the creators devised new characters who would aid Dr. Eggman and challenge the established cast of heroes. Although Yuji Uekawa was assigned the task of drawing the final character design, it was Takashi Iizuka who conceived the idea for Shadow,[2] with the idea of ​​using a dark, anti-hero figure who was similar to Sonic in form, but not in personality. When creating Shadow, there was a proposal to create a character who was as cool as, or even cooler than, Sonic.[1] Several early designs for Shadow ranged from having long spines with tufts of hair in front of his eyes, to capes, sunglasses, or even a missing eye. Shiro Maekawa came up with Shadow's final design and considers himself Shadow's creator. He even states that there are times when he feels a stronger bond with Shadow than with his actual relatives.[1]

When he was designed, the character's original name was "Terios," which translates as "reflection of," most likely playing into the hero/villain dynamic within the game. According to Kazuyuki Hoshino, Shadow's red stripes were inspired by Kabuki makeup.[5]

The character was first shown to the public in a game trailer; however, its name was not revealed. GameSpot describes the brief glimpse as a version of "Dark Sonic": similar

When they first met, Shadow believed Sonic had been copying him, and vice versa. He initially held this belief in Sonic Heroes, largely due to his amnesia. Shadow and Sonic's conflicts tend to arise because, while their goals often align, their views on justice, morality, and how to act accordingly can sometimes differ. Their disagreements occasionally escalate into bitter fights. In some ways, the two hedgehogs are polar opposites in every respect, except for their appearance and objectives.

Despite their differences, Shadow and Sonic have helped each other on several occasions. Shadow helped Sonic defeat Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes, allied himself with Rouge and Team Sonic to return both teams to their proper time periods, and saved the blue hedgehog from Silver's second attempt to kill him in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). He showed grief at Sonic's death and told Silver that they couldn't defeat Solaris without his help. In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, he clearly shows concern for Sonic's safety. He also helped motivate Sonic to defeat the Time Eater in Sonic Generations and attended his birthday party. He seemed worried about Sonic when Infinite mentioned using his new power against him and rushed to save him in Sonic Forces at the beginning of the game, but unfortunately, it was too late. He later managed to save Sonic from a replica of himself in High Sunset, despite the blue hedgehog's initial suspicions. Nevertheless, Shadow fought alongside Sonic for the remainder of the war. In general, although the two still disagree due to their conflicting opinions, there is also mutual respect between them.[18] They are both willing to put aside their differences for the greater good and help each other when necessary.

If there's one thing you can say about Shadow and Sonic, it's that they're rare to get close to and become personal with. Because of their high performance in terms of both physical abilities and intellect, there aren't many who can keep up with them. Furthermore, even fewer are able to persist, offer opinions, interfere, or get in their way and try to stop them, despite their initial reluctance. In fact, Sonic is perhaps the only person who can get close enough to Shadow to truly connect with him and say something that resonates deeply (though this often doesn't happen). In a way, Sonic's presence is problematic for Shadow, but it's also one of the most important. However, while Sonic is receptive to hearing things that hit a nerve, from Shadow's perspective, Sonic is a real pain. Regardless of the great impact they have on each other, they both share the philosophy of following their hearts' desires, which causes them to clash, cross paths, and sometimes divide into friends and enemies.[12]

Regardless, Shadow has his moments of selflessness and heroism; he nearly sacrificed his life at the end of the ARK Space Colony to save Earth, and helped Silver uncover the truth of Project Solaris after saving Sonic from it in an aborted timeline.

In his early years of creation, Shadow was a helpful hedgehog and even somewhat shy in personality. In the Japanese version, he had a different voice due to his shyness. He appreciated his creator Gerald Robotnik and his best friend Maria Robotnik; whom he considered his family. Upon witnessing Maria's death at the hands of GUN, Shadow was not only shocked but also showed anguish for not being able to save her and having to save himself in her place. He often used to listen to Maria talk about the wonders of Planet Earth. In the present, Shadow has no appreciation for either people or Planet Earth itself, but defends the planet in Maria's honor. Shadow has a very close relationship with E-123 Omega, who, aside from Maria and Rouge, may be Shadow's best friend. This relationship is first shown when Shadow searches for Omega midway through Sonic Heroes. This was also shown in Shadow the Hedgehog (Game) when Shadow willingly helped Omega in Iron Jungle and Lava Shelter. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), both Shadow and Rouge were somewhat saddened by Omega's reprogramming to hunt Shadow in the future, as Shadow was seen as an overpowered life form, causing humanity to fear him. The bond between the two may have been strengthened by the fact that Shadow is the ultimate life form and Omega is considered the ultimate robot, sharing a common importance to the world. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Shadow joins Sonic's team to find Omega, clearly showing his anger if the player refuses to rescue him and declaring that if he doesn't find Omega, he will be "very upset." He also states that "he was his friend too," which is the first time Shadow has openly called someone his friend, though he only says this after Sonic asks him, and not very willingly. This is evidence that he doesn't like seeing his closest friends hurt. This is also shown when the player finds Omega in Metropolis and Shadow orders Eggman to shut up after telling him not to bother checking if Omega is okay. When Tails says robots are coming, Shadow replies, "Good. I need to smash something." Again, this is shown when Tails realizes he can fix Omega; Shadow simply orders him to "do it." Shadow and Omega team up for two POW moves. One is Focus Field, which involves Omega opening fire on an enemy with his guns, then Shadow following up with Chaos Blast. The other move is Metal Storm.

The relationship between Shadow and Black Doom may have been brief, but it played a significant role in Shadow's life. Shadow acquired Black Doom's blood through an agreement between the alien and Professor Robotnik; this technically makes Black Doom Shadow's biological father. Black Doom initially tried to win Shadow over by exploiting Shadow's lingering painful memories of losing Maria. Regardless of the path taken during the game, Shadow defeated Black Doom and destroyed the Black Comet along with the Black Arms. Throughout the events of Shadow the Hedgehog (Game), Black Doom threatens Shadow and demands unwavering loyalty and respect, even when Shadow is helping him. He also tolerates no mistakes or failures, no matter how difficult the task is for Shadow. In the end, Shadow refused to help him and decided to put an end to his biological father and his "offspring" after learning of his true plans. "I've heard enough!
