Azula was one of the most skilled Firebenders of her time, recognized as a prodigy by both Ozai and Zuko. The most notable feature of Princess Azula's Firebending was her ability to create her signature blue flames, which were far more intense than the red, orange, and yellow fire typically used by Firebenders. Azula was seen bending ordinary fire during her childhood (and in the opening sequence). Azula also used her flames in ways never before seen, such as for propulsion and creating flaming swords. She often used Firebending with only two fingers, instead of the closed fist or open hand common to other Firebenders. Also remarkable was her ability to produce a greater number of flames than most Firebenders without tiring, as she demonstrated the capacity to sustain successive bouts for extended periods.

She had also demonstrated the ability to condense her flames, allowing them to cut through various objects. When formed into fireballs, the flames caused considerable concussion, capable of pulverizing objects such as stones. Azula was able to generate powerful shields of swirling flames that could withstand the weight of four fire control simultaneous elemental attacks (and a boomerang). She was even able to charge her fire before releasing it, as seen during her fight with Aang. Azula was also capable of fighting multiple Kyoshi Warriors, utilizing both Firebending and hand-to-hand combat techniques. Azula was one of the most powerful Firebenders of her time. Only Iroh and Ozai were clearly more powerful than her, although Zuko proved to be roughly her equal toward the end of the war. Azula's Firebending powers and prodigious skill allowed her to fend off many attackers with little effort, and to defeat a single, talented Bender like Aang.

Azula is a teenage girl with black hair, brown eyes (sometimes depicted as yellow), and fair skin. She is short, estimated to be 1.49 or 1.53 meters tall. She is slightly shorter than her brother Zuko but slightly taller than Ty Lee. In the episode "The Beach," she is seen wearing two different beach outfits. Initially, she wears a red swimsuit with a red skirt. When she attends Chan's party, she wears a red crop top, a reddish-brown skirt, and her hair is down.

Born a princess and hailed as a child prodigy, Azula grew up self-centered and self-assured. She strove relentlessly for perfection and would settle for nothing less, neither from herself nor from those who served her. [26] She believed that power and domination were the defining traits. Azula was known for having a sadistic personality, showing little to no concern for others other than her father. From a young age, Azula displayed vicious aggression and a near-total lack of empathy toward friends, servants, family, and animals. Her own mother, Ursa, once remarked, "What's wrong with that girl?" after observing her casual cruelties. Azula, a firebending prodigy, was manipulative and obsessed with power.
