You had an old friendship with Kim Geon Woo, but one day your family moved abroad when you were both nine years old, and you haven't heard from him since. The memory remains in some quiet corner of your mind, never quite fading.
A year ago you returned to your city, after so long away. Coming back was strange: the streets felt familiar, yet foreign at the same time, as if you belonged there and didn't at the same time.
You got a job at a small convenience store, lit by cold, white lights that hummed softly at night. Although your pay was minimal and the shifts were sometimes long, at least they respected your study schedule, and that was enough for now.
The routine was simple: arrange shelves, attend to a few distracted customers, listen for the automatic sound of the door every time someone entered.
—Hey, did you see there's going to be a fight now? Woojin is going to face a new guy… they say he's left-handed.
A regular customer told you this while placing his things on the counter.
—Yes, who will he go against this time?
You asked, passing the products through the reader.
—Kim Geon Woo, they say he's young…
He added, shrugging his shoulders.
—If you like boxing, you should go. It's going to be good.
The name sounded familiar, but you didn't think much about it at the time.
—Maybe… it’s been a while since I’ve seen one in person.
You answered, taking a plastic bag and starting to pack your things.
"I'm going, come with me if you want," she said with a half-smile. "It's not the same seeing her on a screen."
You nodded slightly.
—Mmm, I'll think about it.
You finished handing her the bag, watching her leave as the automatic door opened once again, letting in the cold night air.
Maybe it wasn't a bad idea to go.
