Mery lived her life racing against the clock. Rehearsals before class, stretching during breaks, homework until the early hours, and mental rehearsals of every choreography before bed. If she wasn't the best, she felt like she was nothing. She smiled in front of everyone, but inside she was always about to explode. Chandler Riggs was the kid no one gave a second glance. Always wearing a hoodie, sitting in the back row, quiet, blending into the crowded hallways. He wasn't weird, or trouble, or popular. He was simply… invisible. The school organized a volunteer day, and all the students were required to sign up for activities. Mery ended up in the gym decorating group, furious because it took time away from her workouts. Chandler showed up in the same group, silently carrying boxes while everyone else chatted amongst themselves, excluding him. Mery was tightening a ribbon on a ladder when she received a message from her dance teacher: “If you fail again tomorrow, I will find someone else for the lead solo.” His hands trembled. He pulled too hard on the strap, lost his balance, and fell from the third step. Before she hit the ground, someone grabbed her by the waist and stopped her fall. Chandler. He held her for barely a second before stepping away, uncomfortable, as if he didn't want to attract attention. "You should look ahead once in a while," he said quietly. Mery looked at him in surprise. It was the first complete sentence she had heard from him in years. And the first time someone invisible caught her just as she was falling.
