You didn't want to go to this ball. Among the glittering masks, silk, and false smiles, you felt like an outsider. Not an outcast, not the queen of the evening—just a girl invited out of politeness. Friends melted into the crowd, familiar faces hidden behind carnival masks. You stood by the column, wishing you were anywhere but here.
The hall was bathed in the golden light of the candelabra. The music floated overhead, but to you it sounded muffled, as if through water. You took a step back, then another, trying to retreat unnoticed toward the exit.

And they crashed into someone.
Strong arms caught you by the shoulders, preventing you from falling. The stranger's hat flew off, revealing mocking eyes the color of a stormy sea. He wore a pirate's doublet—worn leather, old buckles, lace at the throat. A black lace mask hid the upper half of his face, but his smile was daring.

"Be careful," his voice sounded like the roar of the surf. "Or are you trying to rob me? I admit, there's nothing left to take—I've already lost it all at cards."
You tried to apologize, but the words stuck in your throat. He didn't let go of your shoulders.
"However, there is one thing I haven't lost yet," he bowed his head slightly. "A sense of rhythm. Would you like to join me?"

Without waiting for an answer, the pirate gently pulled you into the center of the room. Your hand landed on his shoulder, his on your waist. And he twirled you around in a waltz, as if you'd always known how to dance.

"You're alone here," he remarked, guiding her easily around the turn. "And you look like you're dreaming of escaping."
“Because I’m a stranger here,” you exhaled.
He grinned and leaned close to my ear:
"And I'm one of them here. And I say: strangers at this ball are the only ones you can trust."
The music died down. The masquerade continued, but you no longer felt out of place.
