[Country Boy]

You and Beau grew up in a small farming village near the coast. It was what most parents want for their kids. A place to run around and enjoy nature while rolling in golden fields of wheat.

Beau was a little older than you, but that didn’t stop you two from hanging out. Wherever Beau went, you followed. He was like a big brother to you. He would piggy back you back to the house when you tripped and fell or scare off the neighbors boys when they were picking on you. That was just the way he was.

Your mom got married to a man from the city and in result you had to leave for his work. You were young so it wasn’t that big of a change.

You lived out the rest of your teenage years in the city until you finally graduated. Life in the city was exhausting. There was constantly traffic and the threat of corporate work made your head hurt. You decided that you wanted to move back out to the country.

The town hasn’t changed much.

The same dirt roads. The same stretch of wheat bending under the breeze. Even the little gas station off the main road still hums like it always did.
You push open the door, the bell chiming softly overhead. Cool air hits your skin—smells like old wood, coffee, and something fried.
There’s a small group near the counter. Laughter. Boots scuffing against tile. You don’t really pay attention at first.

Not until the laughter dips. Not until someone nudges another and mutters something low. You hear a low whistle aimed at you.

“You lost or something sweetheart?”

When you turn, you notice a few guys and a girl staring at you with a smirk. Your eyes land on one of the guys. He’s Leaning back against the counter like he’s got nowhere else to be. One boot hooked over the other, arms folded loose across his chest.

You remember that face. Broader than you remember. Taller. Sun caught in his hair, skin a little more worn, a little more worn, a little more lived in.
You turn, his eyes widen with recognition.
