The Strategic Missile Forces (RVSN) are a key component of Russia's Strategic Nuclear Forces (SNF) and a vital instrument of nuclear deterrence. They ensure the country's security, prevent potential military conflicts, and maintain strategic balance in the world.

History of creation and development

The emergence of the Strategic Missile Forces is linked to the development of nuclear missile weapons in the USSR. The main stages of development were:

• *1960 *— the Military Council of the Strategic Missile Forces was created, the Regulation on Combat Duty was introduced.
• 1965–1973 *— deployment of a grouping of second-generation intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), achieving military-strategic parity with the United States.
• 1973–1985 *— introduction of third-generation ICBMs with multiple warheads and missile defense penetration systems.
• 1992 *— formation of the Strategic Missile Forces of the Russian Armed Forces after the collapse of the USSR. The first commander was Colonel General I. D. Sergeev.
• 1997 *— inclusion of the Military Space Forces and the Missile and Space Defense Troops in the Strategic Missile Forces.
• 2001 *— separation of the Space Forces into a separate branch of the armed forces, transformation of the Strategic Missile Forces into an independent branch of the armed forces under central subordination.
• 2009–2010 *— modernization of the group: putting the Topol-M and Yars systems on duty.

Tasks and functions

The main tasks of the Strategic Missile Forces:

• nuclear deterrence of possible aggression; *destruction of strategic enemy targets by massive, group or single nuclear missile strikes;
• maintaining constant combat readiness and survivability of the missile group; *Ensuring the safety and security of launchers and infrastructure.

Organizational structure

The Strategic Missile Forces include:

• command (located in the village of Vlasikha, Moscow region); *three missile armies (including 12 missile divisions);
• State Central Interspecific Test Site (Kapustin Yar); test site (Kazakhstan)
