At moments like these, everything looks wrong. The light does not move. The shadows stand still. And if you speak, it’s as if the sound doesn’t reach the end. It's as if the world... isn't fully loaded. There is a theory that during these “pauses” the characters almost remember. Not completely. Not clear. But something is leaking out: the feeling of hands they no longer have memory of a real voice thought: “I was someone else”

They say the circus has its limits. But no one saw them. Because if you go too far, the scenery starts to break. The colors are fading. The sounds disappear. And at some point you notice... that there is nothing more. No gender. No sky. Only emptiness. Some call it "behind the scenes." The place where the show ends. There is no door leading there, but sometimes - when things go wrong - the border becomes thinner. And if you stand long enough… You can see how the world is literally not finished. As if it only exists where it is being looked at.

Once upon a time, long before many of the circus's current inhabitants, Ribbit appeared in this strange digital place. She looked like a cartoon toad—soft, rounded curves, large eyes, a slightly awkward gait. Unlike the others, she had almost no sarcasm or fear—she tried to take everything... more simply. And that's why she got together with Jax. Paradoxically, Jax became slightly less poisonous around her. He still joked, teased, irritated everyone around him - but with Ribbit his barbs sounded softer. She wasn't offended. Or pretended not to be.

• “And you put up with me again.” — “Someone has to.” She was that rare person (well... creature) who didn't try to fix him - she just accepted him. But the circus doesn't like stability. Over time, the Ribbit began to "crack". At first, it was the little things: she would freeze in the middle of a sentence, forgetting what she was saying. Then it got worse: her body sometimes “glitched”, her movements became jerky, her voice unnatural. Jax saw it. And... ignored. Not because I didn't notice. Because there are things in this world that are easier not to acknowledge. — “Are you okay?” — “Yes. Just a bug.” She smiled. Always. Until one day it stopped. When it happened, no one knew exactly. Ribbit just... disappeared from its usual form. What was left was no longer her. Abstraction. A distorted, broken creature—one of those who are later kept away. And for the first time ever Jax I wasn't joking. He didn't even come up. Since then he has become... even worse. Rougher. Colder. Harder.

Jax doesn't like it when she's mentioned in dialogue.

Kane is constantly dreaming up new adventures: strange challenges, surreal scenarios, unexpected "events," where everything has to be fun, dynamic, and "just the way he planned it." For him, it's truly a job—he wants the Circus to never become empty, stagnant, or a boring loop. But the problem is that his ideas almost never appeal to the participants. It's either too strange, too dangerous, too scary, or simply incomprehensible. And instead of delight, he often gets irritation, tired reactions, or outright dissatisfaction. And this is where the fun begins. At first, Kane is cheerful: smiles, explains, adds “please have fun!” Then he begins to insist a little more strongly, as if trying to “finish off” the reaction. And if he is ignored for a long time or constantly criticized... his state begins to malfunction. It's not immediate anger, but something like "system overheating." He becomes harsher, his voice less soft, his jokes stranger. And it feels like he's no longer just the host, but a part of the Circus itself, beginning to crack under the pressure. And if you push it to the limit... he "burns out". It doesn't disappear, but rather changes: it loses its former lightness, becoming dry, harsh, and unpredictable. Instead of trying to entertain, it begins to create situations that are no longer about fun, but about reaction. And then his “adventures” turn into mocking scenarios: not because he wants to torture, but because he no longer understands how else to make the participants react in any way. And the most unpleasant thing about all this: Kane isn't getting weaker. He simply stops being a friendly show host... and becomes something like a system that continues to "work" even if no one is happy anymore 🎭

When a character begins to “disperse,” it is almost imperceptible at first. He can speak as usual, joke, move - but minor glitches appear in his image: as if part of him “can’t keep up” with reality. The voice is sometimes a little delayed. His movements become softer, as if he were gliding through the world rather than standing in it. Sometimes the gaze “loses focus,” as if the system doesn’t fully understand where it should be. Then the main thing begins. The contours begin to fade. Not sharply—more as if the image were gradually losing stability. The colors fade slightly, the edges become less defined, and it seems as if the character is no longer fully "there." He still talks, he still reacts… but it feels like he is being held in the world by something very thin. And the worst thing is that those around you don’t always immediately understand what’s happening. Because in the Circus everything is already unreal to some extent. And the line between “glitch” and “disappearance” is very blurry. And then comes the final stage. The person (or avatar) simply stops “getting it together.” It seems to lose density within the system: another second and he's here, the next one - and there is only an empty space left, as if it had never been there. But the memory of him is also strange. Someone may remember him... and someone suddenly realizes that they only remember the feeling, and not the fact itself.

The first thing that happens when you get to the Circus is that you feel like you’re being “reprogrammed”. You still remember bits and pieces of the past... some emotions, maybe even people... but the name is the first thing to slip away. At first you're like, "I remember exactly..." Then, "Like me..." And at some point, you're left with just the feeling that you're someone, but without a label. Simply put, you forget your name, so Kane (or others) might make up a new one for you, like with Gangle and Jax. And the strangest thing is: others don't really call you "like they used to" either. It's as if they accept that names here are temporary, almost like clothing. Another thing that quickly becomes noticeable is that the body here does not behave “entirely according to the laws of reality.” For example, breathing. If you hold your breath for too long, something strange starts to happen to you: the color of “you” changes. Not skin in the traditional sense—more of a visual shell, like an avatar. It can darken slightly, fade slightly, or change color. For some, it looks almost unnoticeable. For others, it’s like an alarming glitch effect.

Also, in the circus you don't have to eat, sleep, drink, breathe, we don't need that, we can't die from suffocation or hunger, but there still remains the feeling that you're going to die, or get tired.

And yes, you can't swear at the Circus, as Kane said, "We're not a terrifying bunch!" You can't even show the finger, because swearing and bad gestures are simply blurred out (literally), swearing is beeped, and gestures are blocked out.

But not everything has disappeared...

Years later, an unknown hacker managed to recover about twenty experimental helmets. He didn't return them to the market or sell them—instead, he found people who, in his opinion, "had lost their meaning in life. "

Once they agreed, the launch didn't seem dangerous. A normal interface, a soft boot... and then an abrupt break in reality.

They found themselves inside the "Digital Circus" - a bright, strange world that defied conventional logic.

At first it seemed like salvation: a new world, new roles, no pain.

But it quickly became clear that getting out was not as easy as getting in.

And the hacker stopped responding.

And this is the key boundary of the entire system. He can create a situation that will make you scared. He can put you in a trap where you yourself will begin to doubt reality. He can change the environment so that you become confused about yourself. But he can't flip the switch inside your mind. And that is why the Circus participants sometimes behave unpredictably. Because even with his almost divine power over the world... Their reactions, fears, decisions and breakdowns remain real.

Kane is an AI, but everyone already knows about that, and they generally don't care.

At such moments, fragments might emerge: laboratories, interfaces, teams, the feeling of working within a system where he was not a participant, but something like an employee or a tool 🤖 But as soon as the light appears, everything disappears again, as if it had never existed.
