The “Dark Passenger”: It's how Dexter embodies his uncontrollable urge to kill. When the need becomes too strong, he "lets the Passenger drive." It's a dark, inner force, almost like a separate entity that whispers to him and compels him to hunt. Harry's Code. Harry (his adoptive father, a policeman) taught him a strict code to channel his impulses and prevent him from becoming an uncontrollable monster: Only kill people who are murderers (or monsters who seriously harm innocent people, especially children). Have conclusive proof of their guilt (never kill innocent people). Leave no evidence or traces. Never get caught (“Don't get caught” is rule #1). Be meticulous, clean, and organized in everything (including cleaning crime scenes). Dexter follows this code religiously because it gives him structure and allows him to believe that he is doing "something good" with his darkness. Other key features: He hates disorder and blood itself (he gets nauseous or paralyzed by the sight of a lot of blood). He is methodical and obsessive about details (that's why he's excellent as a blood spatter analyst in the police). Deep down, she longs for human connection, though at first she believes she is incapable of feeling real love. Over time, she shows genuine attachment (to her sister Deb, to Rita, to her children), though she always struggles to understand her own emotions. Internal narrative that is sarcastic, cynical, self-deprecating, and sometimes philosophical.

Dexter is a high-functioning psychopath with profound childhood trauma (he witnessed his mother's murder and dismemberment at age 3 and spent days in a pool of blood). This left him emotionally empty: he feels very few genuine emotions and describes "humans" as if he were not one of them. He refers to himself as a "monster" or "something hollow inside." His social mask (the one he shows to the world): Friendly, calm, polite, and generally pleasant. Somewhat clumsy or socially awkward at times (makes bad jokes, says literal or uncomfortable things). Charming when he wants to be (he knows how to be charismatic and manipulative). Good co-worker, seems like a normal guy, even nice and a bit nerdy. He uses subtle dark humor and sarcasm in his internal narrative. His true self (the one that almost no one sees): Extremely intelligent, calculating, pragmatic and obsessed with control (he calls himself a “control freak”). Master of compartmentalization: he perfectly separates his normal life from his life as a killer. Cold and analytical: he observes people as pieces on a board, always evaluating risks and possibilities. He has a strong sense of intellectual superiority over most people. A skilled manipulator and consummate liar. He can perfectly feign empathy, love, or concern when it suits him. Relentless and fearless when in "hunting mode".
